I have been using my audiobox in presonus studio 1 with no problems, but when I try to use it in sonar X3 its grayed out and I can not select it as an audio device. What's the deal?

Only one ASIO device my be used at a time. ASIO4ALL is actually a wrapper (using WDM mode) that appears to the host as "ASIO."
 
As your interface has proper ASIO drivers (specific to the hardware), these are preferred. Try uninstalling ASIO4ALL completely, since those drivers seem to "take priority" even over legitimate ones. Just having it installed can cause issues.

The Presonus is not available because another driver is selected. The ASIO specification allows only one driver (not device) to be used at a time. Deselect both the ASIO4ALL input and output and the Presonus will be available for to select. Completely removing ASIO4ALL might be a good idea.

It has been quite  while since I had ASIO4ALL installed, but I thought for some reason that Sonar would load the first ASIO driver it encountered, alphabetically.

I think Windows determines which is scanned first and therefore seen first by Sonar.
