I routinely record live bands with a Tascam hand held stereo recorder.  Then import the wave file into Sonar.  Typically two 2g files.  Different songs (approx. 30 to 60 a night) are at different volumes (band dynamics).  Levels are between -24db to -12db.

Is there a  technique in Sonar to raise the levels of all the songs to a uniform level without losing their inter-song dynamics?
I've tried Normalizing but that does not seem to work well.

Normalize is a method to find the loudest moment in the selected range and then raise the whole track so that moment uses every available bit. You can normalize to any level 0 our below that you like. For example minus 3 dB.

I usually split each song when I do this. Then I apply compression and limiting so that the average loudness on the EBU meter is -14 and the limiter only trims around 1 dB.

Sonar does not have an automated EBU measurement method. I read the level using RME DigiCheck. This requires me to listen to each track at least once before bouncing or exporting.

Thanks for the reply....That's what I have been doing I was hoping for an automated method to save time.

Thanks for the feedback

There's no reason I can think of that it couldn't be automated.

Still, listening helps. There are a lot of compressors and limiters to choose from.

Theoretically, you could set Threshold on the compressor and then it would apply ratio that would be sufficient to get limiting down to 1 dB. Or the other way... you set the ratio and then it would automatically set the threshold to achieve a single dB of limiting.

I am not sure I'd use it if they gave it to us. For example, I tend to adjust gain into the master bus when I'm doing this. That enables me to bring up the soft half of the song a db or so which means less limiting and compression on the hotter half of the song.

Certainly, it's a reasonable ask to be able to calculate the EBU average loudness of a range of audio with a click (like a fast bounce) rather than having to play it through the meter.

Lots of people have asked for the ability to normalize to an average loudness to support the K-System workflow.

I'm guessing we'll see this within the year. It just isn't that hard to do. It's an easy win.
