I have used both, my laptop has command center but my main DAW I use offline. 
In the Sonar menu under tools or Help?  It say's "offline registration" 
They send you a email. 
The old version of X2 can be used forever but it can never be "legal" or registered to use for upgrades by anyone but the original owner. (I think).

hi john - without a quote (or other indication of what "it" is) i'm not sure if you're replying to me? but if you are, thanks! if i get the latest sonar, i don't need to use the ccc at all? i know this is not true for rapture pro (ccc is required) but not for sonar? i certainly get prompted to get ccc installed to get the demo version of sonar

I am replying to you my friend. All our serial and registration numbers are in our CW accounts.  You do not need to use CCC to install Sonar 2015 or any of the older versions. CW has one of the most user friendly install procedures around. Using CCC makes it even easier though.

I think the difference is now they can track how many times you're installing offline.
So if all of a sudden a certain serial number is requested over and over they will smell a rat.
I like the idea as it will keep everyone honest which supports the company. 
The old method was too easy for Pirating and selling old copys to other people.
