• SONAR
  • Media Browser - I Keep Accidentally Changing File Names

Ok, so I'm in Sonar's media browser, auditioning various Acid loops. All is well and good, except that I have to be very careful where I click. If I click anywhere other than on the icon to the left of the loop's file name, that name gets deleted and then shows as just ".wav". I then need to try to figure out what the file was originally named, because if I used that particular file in a previous project, Sonar won't be able to find it under anything but the original name.

Question: Is there a setting which will prevent Sonar from changing file names in the media browser? If not, there should be.

Thanks.

Ditto - I do this all the time and it's very annoying!

Yes, it happens too easily. Have 'lost' some samples because of this as well.
I don't know of any way to prevent this.....

(btw. I just tried on SonarPlatinum on my old Laptop at home which is running Vista-32bit so this is not my regular DAW which runs Win10-64bit. Strangely I wasn't able to unintentionally change/delete the name of a sample......maybe this laptop is too slow ??)

Nb: Maybe this should be posted in the Features & Ideas section of the forum?

Great minds think alike. I just posted this to the features section.

This has been one of the most frustrating things for me in dealing with Sonar's Media Browser -- this has been reported on before.  To me it should basically work like Windows File browser. where the only way to do a file rename is to choose it from a menu.

I've had the thought of making my separate samples drive mount-read only, so this would take care of the issue, but causes some issues if I want to add more samples, and will not (easily) take care of the issue with Sonar's samples itself.  You can mark directories read-only, but if you are Administrator, I think your Admin rights override any settings.

I will go an vote for this in the Features request area as well.

I've never had this problem BUT I just checked it out and can confirm it is WAY to easy to trigger the Windows style doubleclick filename edit option.

To the OP... as bad as this is it takes a keyboard stroke to wipe out the filename so I gotta ask what action are you taking with the keyboard while clicking around files in the Browser that is making the names get deleted? AFAIK there isn't much need to be futzing with key commands from the Media Browser (however I personally have a bad habit of hitting the Spacebar when previewing files because I am so used to engaging playback in Sonar that way... which of course causes some real dumb crap by playing the project instead of the Browser file I intended to play).

So when Browsing files, for now, just avoid even LOOKING at your keyboard unless absolutely necessary while Browsing files unless you have visually confirmed the filename edit box hasn't been enable.

The fix Cakewalk should DEFINITELY implement to fix this is to completely disable the doubleclick filename editing if possible (perhaps it is linked into how Windows does things but it seems even more trigger happy than even the Win version is).

Force it so users have to right click to rename files and folders in the Browser. Most people are in there to preview and drag stuff around... all very click intensive and right clicking is an already established, obvious and easy way to rename files (in fact that's how I rename files in the Browser anyway and have always found the double click rename thing in Windows ultra stupid, unnecessary and annoying anyway).

Engaging this really does seem far more sensitive than in Windows file systems as well. Not sure what that's about but I certainly see the MASSIVE problems this poses considering renaming a file in the Browser gets right into the actual filesystem.

Also there are some very strange voodoo magic dances I've had to undertake to rename folders and files in the Browser that I think are kind of weird and silly. Like you have to go into the Browser Views, show folders and then bounce back and forth to name, sort and move things instead of being able to do it all in one view or the other.

So maybe a quick look at the Media Browser and how it works in general would be a good idea. Ya'll been doing pretty good at fixing things up more logically so maybe this is a quick fix that'll make people happy.

Cheers.

@Beeps:

All I do is accidentally click on a file in the media browser, and the filename is gone with the wind. It has nothing to do with the keyboard.

I've been doing this for years. I've tried to train myself out of it, to no avail.

Fastest clicker in the east.

That is very odd. I'm shut down for the night so can't investigate further but when I was getting to do it it would enable filename editing with the filename text highlighted (just like Windows would). There needed to be another action performed to delete the text (like in Windows).

Now I want to see if maybe Ctrl Z would reverse the action of text deletion while the text box is still open (like a text editor). Track names and Take Lane note boxes do so maybe the fact it's within a Sonar area it would work similarly. I don't think the Windows file names do that though and the Media Browser is of course totally linked to the actual file entries on the system.

Meh... I'm not being helpful.

Total feature/improvement request needed.

Cheers.

Hey, my feature request got the Beeps seal of approval.

I'm totally feeling the love.

I am confused by a slightly different one. So you guys are obviously familiar with the file browser, so when I click on the midi pattern it plays but not with the drum VST I have loaded, it plays with the string VST I have loaded.  How do I set which VST or track plays the midi pattern preview?
