  • Possible Disappearing Automation Envelope Bug in Foxboro: Recipe in OP

Beepster
In the course of trying some other stuff in the Folder Copy/Drag thread I may have found a bug so I'm gonna post a recipe to see if others can confirm in JP. I am currently on Foxboro still so maybe it's already fixed.

Basically this makes automation envelopes disappear from automation lanes... but the parameters they are linked to still seem to respond to the envelope. You just can't see the envelope anymore.

1) Create a track

2) Record some takes/drag in some clips

3) Add some track automation lanes and edit the envelopes so there is something going on (volume/gain/pan/whatever... doesn't matter)

4) With the Automation Lanes open and the enevelopes visible select the track or the Automation lanes (just make sure the automation lanes... and thus envelopes are selected)

5) Close the Automation Lanes (using the close automation lanes button)

6) Drag one of the clips or the parent track "comp clip" (doesn't matter if the Take Lanes are open or not... just as long as the Automation Lanes are closed)

Expected Result: Upon reopening the Automation Lanes the envelopes will still be visible (and ideally will have moved with the clips but that is not relevant).

Actual Result: The envelopes VISUALLY disappear. There is no envelope line, nodes or anything populating the automation lanes. The envelopes do however seem to still affect the parameters they've been mapped to.

I have not yet deciphered whether the envelopes actually moved with the clips either but that is not relevant to disappearing envelopes.

Okay... just reporting it while it's fresh in my mind for folks to test.

If confirmed please, hosts, just move this thread to the Problem Reports area. I am unlikely to submit an official report (got other stuff on my plate... if others want to submit though by all means go ahead and I'd thank you for it) but I'm sure the Baker's will see it there anyway.

Not a biggie for me but I found it and seems like somehting the Baker's would like to check out.

Cheers and thanks.

No problems here with Ipswich.

I really don't understand why you're still on Foxboro, since there are 4 new updates available? Why not just try the new version first and see if the problem persists. Installing a new version is done in a sec. with the 3C  and reverting to older versions  is also easy. Would have saved you a lot of typing if you ask me ;-)

Hi...

I don't have CCC installed and keep my machine offline.

Also not quite ready for JP (I'm a little on the fence about some of the performance reports and am hoping next month's release might get better reviews... even though JP will likely be fine on my system I'm in no big rush at the moment).

This issue actually doesn't affect my personal needs (at the moment). Just something I found in the course of other explorations and figured I'd report it so if it is still present it can be addressed. I'm not experiencing any problems in my current project with FB (which I actually just installed about a week ago because I already had it downloaded).

So you worked through the steps and the envelopes remained visible?

If so that would be one test/report saying this is fixed in Ipswich.

Thanks for checking it out. If some others could do the same and confirm I'll change the thread title to say it's been fixed.

Cheers.

I'm fully up to date and can confirm that the problem exists. You can get the envelopes back in their automation lanes by selecting the envelope in question in the track's edit filter (which will remove that automation lane and display the envelope on the track) and then adding the lane again with the + button. But this is definitely a bug.

I have Hopkinton here. I think I am reproducing it, but I need to check if I am understanding your steps:

When you say... "5) Close the Automation Lanes (using the close automation lanes button), I assume you mean with the second button on the lower left, with the jaggy lines?

When I initially open the automation lane using this button, the Edit Filter button in the main track lane changes back to "Clips" and the (in my case green Volume automation) is in the lane.

When I subsequently close the automation lane, the automation moves back to the main track and turns grey, barely visible.

Then I drag and move the track a bit and the barely visible grey automation moves with it.

When I then reopen the automation lane, my volume automation stays in the main track. Even if I first set the Edit Filter to Automation>Volume, then press the button to re-open the automation lane, the volume stays in the main track - it is now green and visible, but it is in the main track, the automation lane is empty.

Is that what you mean? I have never used automation lanes and do not know if this is correct behavior - doesn't feel correct to me.

Oh!

Suddenly when I now drag-move the clip, the volume automation is staying where it is! This is definitely not good.

How did I get here? Let me try repeat my steps:

1) Record 5 seconds of audio
2) Open automation lane using button. Volume Auto appears by default. I do a trivial automation.
3) With the auto lane open, I go to the main track and change the Edit Filter to Volume. This causes the auto lane to close and my Volume Automation is now over the clip in the main track.
4) I change the Edit Filter button from Volume Automation to Clip. My vol automation goes grey.

...and now my automation is broken.
If I now drag-move the clip, the clip moves but the automation stays!

...but if I manage to re-position my clip over my automation and then double-click in the body of the clip, the track is de-selected and the audio appears in the loop constructor, too.

If I now move my clip, the clip and automation will move in sync again!

...on the other hand, if I do not re-position my clip perfectly over my automation before doing the double-click, the automation gets scrambled when I move the clip.

Strange things happening here. Very strange.

Also, the audio in the loop constructor appears and disappears, depending on whether the auto lane is open or not when I double click in the clip body.

Ah. And now it is permanently in the loop constructor. I have Sonar properly confused now.
