  • Sonar X1: Missing MIDI port question

Hello,

I recently had to replace my computer motherboard. I expected that my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra audio interface would require some 'tuning' and indeed it does. When I open Sonar X1, I get a "Missing MIDI Port" window which indicates that 2-Fast Track Ultra Out is missing. It gives me the option of selecting another port, which I did: Port 5, and this works. I also went into Preferences under MIDI and made sure that Port 5 Out was selected. Yet, the error message reappears when I reopen Sonar. What am I missing? It's been a while since I installed X1 and I don't recall what I need to change to correct the error. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Bob. Is the port that is showing up your fasttrack under a slightly different name? If so, just change the mid output of your project to that output and re-save it. Windows has assigned your midi interface to a different location due to your motherboard change.

No, not really a different name. I'm pretty lame when it comes to Sonar X1, so I may have missed your question. I have given ports simple names; is that the cause of the problem? I saved a test project after reassigning the port, but the error message appeared when I reopened the test project. This is more of a nuisance than a problem: I can switch Port 2 out to Port 5 out each time, but I'd rather correct it ASAP.

You can assign friendly names in your mdi settings - but I don't think that is your problem.

Create a new project, insert a midi track and see if your fasttrack is receiving and sending midi on the new port. If it is, windows has assigned your interface to a new port after your motherboard update, and I don't think there is much you can do about that.(Someone else may chime in with a way - I have never found one). If your interface is not working in a new project, you will need to reinstall the drivers.

If your interface is working, it is easy to reassign the midi ports, but there is a catch in x1 if I recall. When you open old  projects, make sure that the midi output change is set for every mdi track. Don't just change it in the annoying popup dalogue telling you that you have missing midi ports-  That is not terribly reliable, and it wont affect hiddden tracks. Once the project is open, check that the output has in fact changed on every midi track. You can change all visible tracks at once by clicking control and then changing any one of outputs.

Hope this helps:)

...and make sure you resave the project once ALL midi outputs are set to the new port.

You can also re-order your midi ports under midi settings. I notice yours has changed from port one to port five. Just go into preferences/midi devices, select your fasttrack output on tbe list and click move selected devices to top. That may do the trick without having to reassign ports if you have multiple midi outputs.

It's also a great idea to put your system specs  and equipment details in your signature on the forum Bob - makes it much easier for everyone to help you find a solution:)

So, I believe I know what the problem is, and have a solution (thanks to your replies to my post). All saved X1 MIDI projects give the MIDI port error, which can easily be resolved by either (1) reassigning in the popup window that appears when the project is opened, or (2) by reassigning each MIDI track to the correct output. After correcting individual tracks and saving the project, reopening does not produce the error.

Also, I was fooled by my own default settings that I use for making a new project. My 'default' setting when making a new project results in the reassignment error; however, creating a new project with the 'normal' settings that shipped with X1 does not. And, MIDI played just fine with the 'normal'-made new project.

So, I think I know what needs to be done to correct the reassign ports problem: edit my "default" settings when making a new project to reflect the new output port, and when opening previously made projects, go thru and change the MIDI output port on each MIDI instrument. I'm 90% sure this will work.

Again, thank you for your time and efforts in helping with my problem. I appreciate your good will and assistance.

PS: I will update my profile to reflect my equipment. Sorry about that, but this is the first time I've been on the 'new' forum. My bad...

End of story: I corrected my default template and all is well. Previously saved projects once their MIDI port assignments have been changed and saved open without error. Thanks.
