  • Sonar Platinum not finding Sonik Synth 2 VST?

I must be doing something really stupid, but I'm reloading Sonar Platinum onto a new computer, along with all my VST's and I've encountered what should be easy to fix, but I can't see to sort it out.. I've reloaded Sonik Synth 2, and everything seems to have installed correctly.. It's a standard VST so I've installed it into - Computer/Programs86/IKMultimedia into a Sonik Synth 2 sub folder and I've pointed Sonar to it using the VST Plug In Manager... and scanned and rescanned but nada.. I've reinstalled Sonik Synth 2, and it doesn't pick it up.. I can see the folder, I can see the Instruments, Preferences, and Preset Folders along with the Sonik Synth 2.DLL file in the folder but nothing.. It doesn't even show up as a failed plug in..

Any suggestions?

Is SONAR running as administrator? If not, it seems to be a requirement for all old 32bit IK synths.

Press P to go to Preferance, > File>VST settings, make sure rescan failed plug-ins is checked. Another option is to create a different vst folder and install Sonik Synth there. These older 32bit IK synth are notoriously pain in the neck to work with in 64bit sonar. I am sure you will not be the last person to complain about 32bit legacy IK plugins.

I have basically given up on 32bit plugins since X3 days. I had acquired all 5 of IK32bit plugin synths in a group sale and then upgraded to ST3. St3 is 64bit only but it will import and play back all of these older library including Sonik Synth and ST2.
If you have some cash to spare you might consider getting ST3 or the cheaper ST3 SE.

I can't see any failed plug ins and I think I've tried ticking the rescan failed plugins, but I'll give this another try. Thanks!

1) Manually move or reinstall your 32-bit IKM plugin in \Program Files(x86)\Cakewalk\{Folder name}
2) Make sure this path is listed in the VST paths in your Sonar Preferences
3) Rescan
4) Run Sonar as admin

Fixed.. sort of... by starting Sonar as administrator I was able to find Sonik Synth 2, set it up and authorize it.. however, I can only seem to get Sonik Synth 2 to run when I have loaded Sonar as administrator... if I don't load as admin I get a VST load error.  Is this normal, should I always be running Sonar as Admin?  I am also having difficulty getting Sonik Synth 2 to find the sounds, even though it's pointed to the correct directory.. I pointed it to the Sonik Synth 2 directory, and tried pointing it to the sub-directory and neither seemed to work..

Yes, the old IK plug-ins were designed using a different version of Windows, in this case I believe it was XP. Since then, the Windows security model changed. As a result, the old IK plug-ins need access to a part of the registry which requires administrator rights. If you can locate the Sonik Synth 2 registry keys, it may be possible to change their permissions to allow SONAR to run without elevated privileges otherwise the host must run as administrator.

I'd love to learn how to do this.
