• SONAR
  • No VST output - AGAIN!!

This is a recurring problem which is driving me nuts!

For some obscure reason, my VSTs have stopped producing audio back out though my Sapphire Pro 40. Focusrite have been very helpful but as the Pro40 is working correctly - apart from the VST issue - they are also at a loss.

This seems to be a Sonar problem because audio from other sources - the Internet, Windows jingles and CDs etc. - are all output correctly. It's only Sonar VST outputs.

On the Sonar desktop screen, the Bar Graph level meters for midi and audio respond to midi input from my keyboard as one would expect, but I cannot get any audio.

On previous occasions when this happened i used several "restore" points which eventually seemed to sort the problem out - but I don't know why or how. Using restore points on this occasion has not worked and I'm at a loss as to how to sort it out.

Do I need to uninstall Sonar and install it again?? Any other things I can try?? Anyone else had this problem - and found a solution??

What about plain audio playing back from SONAR?

Hi. Do you happen to have share drivers with other programs enabled (Preferences (P), Audio, Playback and Recording?
Best of luck.

What specific version of Sonar?
Try deleting AUD.INI (google for details).

This does sound like some other app (or Windows) stealing the audio interface outputs out from under Sonar. When you are working in Sonar, you should turn off all Windows sounds and be aware that switching to audio in your browser or WMP/iTunes and the like can change the bit rate/depth of the interface in a way that Sonar can't take it back. Usually, resetting the interface will solve the problem.

Can this be related to a strange issue I have always had?  If I add too many VST soft synths (virtual instruments), my audio dies until I delete or freeze one or more.  ("Too many" is not the same in every project.  It could be 7 or it could be 12 or some other number.)  I also see both audio and MIDI meters moving, but no sound comes out.

I am only using half my memory and CPU utilization is low.

I don't want to hijack this thread: I am just mentioning this in case it sheds any light on the OP's issue.

Not sure Konrad.

I can have as many as 20/30 vsti's without issue

Don't feel bad....this is happening to me too....but I have narrowed it down to Saffire's control panel and sample rate...
Both Sonar and Saffire control panel's sample rate are the same, but for some strange reason, it won't play back unless you exit out of sonar, go into saffire control panel, switch sample rate and then back, bam, audio starts working...
I definitely think it's a bug with their driver, control panel, but good luck trying to convince their techsupport of that......

hope this helps:)

This is why - somewhat contrary to popular DAW opinion - I recommend keeping your onboard WDM audio device enabled and set is as the default record/playback device for Windows, reserving your "real" (preferably ASIO) audio driver and interface for SONAR. This ensures that Windows and generic multimedia apps keep their mitts off your audio interface.

I happen to also run as Bitflipper has indicated above, with my Windows Default Audio Device set to NOT use my audio interface.  Only my music production software points to my audio interface, and I have zero 'stealing' issues with the ASIO drivers.  I happen to have an HDTV as my computer monitor, so I use its built-in speakers (edited to add: Connected with an HDMI cable) for playing Windows Media Player and YouTube and whatnot.
