  • [SOLVED] Simultaneous Different Tempos - Is This Even Possible?

So I started a new project with a great piano sequence using EZKeys.  The piano part sounds great and has the right movement and energy for the song at 130 bpm.  However, the drums (BFD3) to accompany the piano need to be HALF that tempo to sound right.

So my question is...is there a way to do this easily OR do I need to record the piano for the song at 130 bpm, render it out, save it and then bring it back into a new project set at 65 bpm so that everything works?

Thanks

As BFD uses midi stretch the midi to twice its length (I'm sure there are other solutions but I don't have BFD to check).
If you haven't stretched midi in Sonar you use the CTRL and the mouse at the end of the clip. If it doesn't work then turn off Groove-clip looping.

Hey Grum, thanks for the response.  I feel stupid...I've been a BFD user for years and never realized it even had a MIDI stretch feature but that sounds like it would be what I'm looking for.

Anyone know how to go about doing this in BFD3??

Get the midi onto the Sonar midi track - there must be a method of doing that - and then read my edited 1st post.

Awesome.  Thanks Grum.  I will definitely check that out.

I just checked that.

I was thinking for it to work you need to have the midi track loaded into BFD3's groove editor as it's part of the BFD3 groove effects engine but I just had a look in BFD3 and that feature isn't there any
more. I opened up BFD2 and it's there, there's a double and half time button but if it was ever in BFD3 it's not there any more I'm afraid.

I'm assuming from your first post that the drums you have for the "excellent" piano piece are from the BFD3 groove library or some other library and not ones you've scored your self?
If I had scored them myself I would have just placed the same notes at different places and kept the tempo.
You can have a part playing at 130bpm but a drummer could be playing at half time which would in effect be 65bpm.

Ignore the above (Well not totally)

It is still there in BFD3's groove editor page just about the score view there's a, /2 and a X2 button which is the same thing.
I still think it will only work on midi that is loaded into BFD3 and not midi in sonars midi track.

I'd like to be wrong though

Not sure if you read music or not. If you did, it would not be a problem. It is always possible to notate any number of different rhythms. You just use different not values, or tuplets if necessary. And Sonar will play them correctly (although it may not notate them correctly, as has been amply discussed in other threads).

Ahh - HAAAaaa!!!!  That's it!!!!  Thank you Twaddle.  Yes, you are correct.  If you load the groove clip into the groove editor in BFD3 and then press /2 it does indeed place the groove in half-time.  Then (and this is key) you must drag the groove clip down into the timeline in BFD3 and THEN you can drag the groove from the timeline into the MIDI track in Sonar.  Worked like a charm.

Thanks for the help everyone!!!
