  • Is there an official Cakewalk MP3 encoder for SONAR Platinum? (p.2)

Strangely enough, I don't seem to be able to use the LAME encoder anymore in Sonar Platinum. I've had an external encoder set up for years and when I try to use it now, it says I need to unlock the Cakewalk MP3 license. So I followed the instructions and added a new external encoder that points to LAME or WinLAME and the same thing happens. Of course I can convert to MP3 outside of Cakewalk, but it is handier if I can do it from inside of Cakewalk.

I am having the same problem.  LAME has worked in other boxes and on other applications, just not this one.

Hmm.

For the love of God please not again ;)

Hopefully the short form will be sufficient, the OP will think "Okay, that sounds reasonable," and harmony will rule throughout the land.

OK, that sounds reasonable.

And harmony ruled throughout the land! I bet it's not every day you get an opportunity like that

Ooops, seems to be a glitch in that harmony throughout the land thang. Hopefully someone from Cakewalk will respond, but I'll also check out later this evening, when I'm back on my music computer. I believe there was an update to the encoder, so maybe that's the issue.

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk]
He is referring to using an external encoder with the 3rd party LAME encoder executable.
SONAR's integrated MP3 encoding should not be affected by that. We build and test the LAME encoder internally. Currently we have the latest version of LAME so encoding should be identical with the external LAME encoder. We provide built in encoding for users who prefer the simplicity and don't want to deal with figuring out how to handle setting up the external encoder but there is no compulsion to use it. The advantage of the built in encoder (like other built in encoders like Windows media and Libsndfile) is that it encodes on the fly - ie we don't have to create a Wave file first before running the encoder.

BTW LAME itself isn't "free" - thats a myth. Any commercial application that has MP3 encoding has to pay the license fee. Since the external encoder is distributed free under the GPL licence there is no charge for that.
If you look at the LAME website  they say this:
LAME is an educational tool to be used for learning about MP3 encoding. The goal of the LAME project is to use the open source model to improve the psycho acoustics, noise shaping and speed of MP3. Using the LAME encoding engine (or other mp3 encoding technology) in your software may require a patent license in some countries.

You can see that Cakewalk is listed as a licensed company here:

Well apparently that's not good enough Noel, you, the company, your friends, family and you pets should do a whip round and pay for it yourselves so we can all use it for free... ;) Even if we don't need to use it...

I think this is entirely reasonable... ;)

Years ago, in an ancient version of Sonar, I paid for the MP3 upgrade. The unlock code still works fine, and I am using the Lame one Sonar installs.

However, I remember the UI from that old version claimed it was a Fraunhofer version, not Lame. Although I have corresponded with Cakewalk regarding this, I still don't understand why I can't have the original version instead of the Lame one.

Thanks for any enlightenment!

My apologies, I wasn't intending to be rude.
While I have seen countless threads on this topic over the years I realize this may not be the case with everyone, so my comment was inappropriate.
And despite my sometimes unintentional rudeness,  I do cover my mouth when I yawn.
