sqye - as i mentioned at the top of the page, you need to export an uncompressed .avi from QT. File > Export > mov to avi > options > video settings > compression type: none........ do that once and the setting will be saved.

So, perfectprint - it sounds like you and Steve Corey are potentially saying different things here?

Steve is scoring in 32-bit - as was I.

Now, I'll be using Vegas to do the .AVI wrapping - so I can score in Sonar 64-bit - - unless your technique for creating Sonar-friendly .AVIs (or any other Sonar-friendly file formats) works in QT Pro. I still have to test this using your conversion method recommendation.

But I just want to be clear about your differences with Steve here.

Thanks!

Steve sounds like he knows what he is talking about with video. I recognize 'codecs' 'compression' 're-encoding' but am not well versed enough on the subject to know the specifics of what is what in the video world. All I know is how to get .mov files sent to me to work in Sonar 64. I went the least complicated route, using software already installed on my computer and after a few missteps, found a result that has worked for me over the last couple of years. Not sure how much Vegas is - but at least you get video editing capability with it. QT Pro just unlocks some features.

I don't think perfectprint and I are saying different things, we've just come up with different ways to achieve our goals.  perfectprint is explaining how he gets a video file to use in 64-bit Sonar, and I explained how I find it necessary to stay with 32-bit Sonar for QT compatibility since re-encoding all the videos that come to me into a format that Sonar-64 can use isn't feasible in my workflow.

As a side note, there is a difference between QT's "none" and Sonar's "none" when creating an .avi file. QT's means "uncompressed codec" and Sonar's means "don't change the codec, don't re-encode, just use what's there".  And again, that's just for exporting an .avi file from those respective programs.

To submarin: Yes, I just re-marry the audio and video in QT after creating the soundtrack. I'm not at my studio at the moment otherwise I'd walk through it and give instructions.

Hi everybody,

it is actually not necessary to convert QT .mov files for playback in Sonar 64 on Windows 64.
I tried this when I upgraded my DAW to Win7 64bit and it works great!

All you need is the right codec for this job and there are many free codec packages available.
I use the "K-Lite Codec Pack x64" but I'm sure, others will work, too.

It's recommended by the install notes to install also the 32bit Codec Pack under a 64bit OS, so I did this, too.

Just install the codecs and you can import .mov files in Sonar.
If Sonar doesn't let you pick up .mov files in the import dialogue for the first time, choose "All Files" and then open your .mov file.

Best,
Klaus

Wow, thanks, guys.

This thread is getting better and better.

I'm going to try everything you guys are suggesting, and see if any of these solutions work for me.

Very cool!

And Steve - what do you think of Klaus's solution here?

Hey Klaus.

This is awesome. Thanks!

JOOC, what specific 32bit Codec Pack did you install - was it the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack?

I had tried K-Lite (and a few other codec packs) a few years ago and it didn't solve my problem. Maybe it's time to re-visit it and see how it's progressed.  I am a little leery of those codec packs because they tend to install lots of stuff that isn't needed for what I do, but nowadays it's easy to roll back the system if it doesn't work out. I'll have to find the time to give it a go.

Thanks again Steve!!

@ Klaus: noch ein Sonar user aus Köln??

@sqye: No, I installed only the "Standard" 32bit version of the K-Lite codec pack additionally to the 64bit version.

@Scorey: I'm also quiet picky about what is installed on my DAW (dedicated, music only, no network, etc.), so I understand your hesitation very well.
From my experience with this particular codec pack, everything went fine.
During the installation you have full control about what will be installed and what not. And Win7's "Uninstall/Change Programs" program lists only the 2 codec packs (32/64), so I think that's o.k.
For me, of course

@submarin: Wären wir damit etwa schon zwei?

Best,
Klaus
