You have a tech? Good.
No one should be without one. :-)

The only good reason for going through the pain is if you are still running 32bit, which being xp I suspect you are. As others have mentioned, there is no way to non destructively upgrade from any 32bit OS to a 64bit OS so gather up all your serial numbers and user names and passwords and bite the bullet.
I had various software which I had paid for only to find it only ran at 64bit (I was running 32bit Win7 Pro) . Going forward, more an more products will not offer 32bit versions, so a clean install of Win10 was for me, preferable to a new install of Win7 64bit plus all the  patches and service packs.  If you do buy a copy of Win 7 and step upgrade it is worth noting that you have to patch it to at least SP1 to get the free Win10 upgrade.

I bit the bullet and upgraded from win7 32bit to win10 64 bit (upgrade first at 32bit to register your computer) then clean install of 64 bit using a usb stick with a copy downloaded from Microsoft's media creation tool.

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the feedback.  Helps a lot.

My tech suggested the dual drive setup, leaving the XP drive intact.
I can migrate stuff with no risk.
I use an RME FF800 so there are no issues with drivers.
Once everything is stable, I can change over 100%.

What are your PC specs? CPU/Memory/hard drive especially.
32 bit or 64 bit OS?

I use all of em,,  XP, W7 and W 8.1 and all I can say is XP is sloooowwww   There is no reason unless you like sitting around for 3 minutes just to start a computer to stay with old OS systems.
And Sonar doesn't care which system you are on.  old files open on all new versions without a hitch for me. Only the odd 3rd party vst glitch.
Don't use bundles,  use CWP and per project  folder.
Your tech recomondation to keep yur old drive is a good one, that's how I upgrade, I leave my old hard drive alone and install a new one. The old drive becomes a data drive and that way there is no danger of losing old files.

Do what the Dr. has recommended.  Computers have changed a lot since the Old XP days.  Now we have 2, 3, or more HDD @7200 rpm that are SATA, not the old ata type.  The SATA spec uses small cables.
Also the SDD disks and DVD or Blu ray are SATA.  Which means having a good power supply of 600 watts or better.

Just get a new box.

Ok, so all I did was have a new SSD installed into my tower.  It runs W7.  Just installed Platinum last night.  Works perfectly.  I left the old HD where it was and had it linked as a data drive E:.  I can just slip across and open any of my projects into Platinum with no issues.  I can also still boot from the old drive and run in XP exactly as I was before.
Everything works and life is good!

Thanks for everyone's input.

Your next terrifying experience may be to update to Windows 10 before July 2016 (free period).
