What would be the advantage of this?

You can (and should) rename busses to anything you like.

I do name tracks and buses.

But the tracks are still numbered. And the buses are still lettered.

Numbers seem more consistent.

And more useful: "How many buses does this project use?"  "M buses." "Add another C buses for the guitars."

Consistency is nice when having to deal with large numbers of the same thing.

Tracks and buses are however very different from each other. To have one identified by numbers and the other by letters makes it easier to quickly tell them apart without really thinking about it.

Yes but  tracks and buses are in different areas.  Easy to identify, yes?
And the numbers and letters only are displayed in menus when the names have not been changed. And all of mine usually are.
And,...

T1, T2, T3; B1, B2, B3 (ie. 2 characters per track/bus, assuming font sizeis reduced to compensate)?

Current behaviour fine IMHO. Of course a setting in preferences could accommodate both scenarios.
