Is it possible to make Cakewalk TTS-1 my default soft synth. Every time I load a midi file from my saved files (from a previous version) I have to first add the soft synth & then change each track individually from Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth to Cakewalk TTS-1. This is very tedious.

In the preferences the MS GS Synth is the only midi device available. Is the Cakewalk TTS-1 supposed to also be there so I can move it to the top?

Thanks

Deselect the MS GS synth, there is no need to have a MIDI output specified if that is the only one you have. TTS-1 would not be listed because it is not a MIDI output device, it is a soft synth. The feature to automatically open MIDI files with TTS-1 was introduced with SONAR X3. I am not sure the feature is available with MC6 which is based on X2. If the feature is part of MC6, it will only work if there are no MIDI output devices selected in preferences. Fortunately, synth assignments only need to happen one time as long as the file is saved as an MC6 project.

It is worth looking at the upgrade to X3. If you have no MIDI output selected and double click a MIDI file (with X3 set as default to play them), X3 will load TTS-1 and assign all channels for you.

Thanks to you both. I'll definitely consider X3.

Edited - I had typed in what seems now to have been incorrect info on a possible sale.

I DO recommend X3, if you can swing it.

After installing X3, make sure to download and install the X3e update http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013361/SONAR-X3e-Update then run a VST reset and rescan http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013315/SONAR-X3-Full-VST-Rescan-Recommended-for-Upgraders

If you plan on removing MC6 from the PC, do it BEFORE installing X3.

Thanks for that Scook. Unfortunately I have already installed X3 so I guess I won't bother to remove MC6.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I suppose if I did decide to remove MC6 Could I just remove & re-install X3 if neccessary?

MC6 (or SONAR for that matter) does not take up a massive amount of computer space. Most of the space is related to sample libraries and audio from projects. As you are new to X3, I would recommend simply leaving MC6 on your machine, as you can easily go back to it to make things while learning X3. Each installation is a separate entity, so they do not interfere with each other (although some have common components). I have SONAR 7, X1, X2, and X3 on this machine.

The first "hurdle" for you is becoming familiar with the GUI within X3. I recommend downloading the reference guide and working through the tutorials in the first several chapters (the pdf is also searchable).

The worst that can happen when deleting an older Cakewalk DAW after installing a new one is some of the shared components used by all the Cakewalk DAWs will be deleted. Re-installing the new one again is the fix.

It is fairly common to leave old version installed. There is so much overlap between versions little is gained be deleting old ones. About half the disk space used in SONAR Producer are samples and loops. For example, deleting an old version of SONAR frees up about 200MB of disk space, the space taken up by the actual program and configuration files. One of the advantages of having older versions installed is the ability to open projects in the version which created them. Generally Cakewalk DAWs are backward compatible; however, having the version which created a project available has proven useful, especially when moving from 32bit to 64bit DAWs. In this case, it did not appear that dealing with a large body of old projects was an issue. That is why I mentioned deleting MC6 in the first place.

FWIW, the reference guide is a snapshot of the original help files in pdf format. It is not maintained as updates are made to SONAR. The most current version of the help files are the web-based help on the Cakewalk servers. The chm version installed on the PC is a snapshot of the web-based help made around the time of the update.
