Hello.  Either the Take Lane function is not working or I don't understand how it is supposed to work.

I am using Sonar Platinum running on Win 7.

1) Have existing project.  Create new audio track in project.
2) Record audio onto new audio track - no problem, play-back is fine.
3) Record new audio onto same track.  Open up Take Lanes for that track and see two lanes called T1 and T2.
4) The take lane for the older take (T1) appears "greyed-out"; the take lane for the newer take (T2) appears normal color.
5) I mute T1.  On play-back T2 sounds fine.
6) I un-mute T1 and mute T2, expecting to hear T1.  On play-back, T1 is silent; I hear nothing - even tho' I could hear this audio after initially recording it.
7) I solo T1 with T2 muted.  On play-back, only silence.
8) The ONLY way I can get T1 to play-back now is to solo the track itself, AND solo T1.  When I do this I hear the T1 audio fine.

I am expecting that I can mute T1 and hear T2[link=mailto:T@,],[/link] and then mute T2 and hear T1.  But this isn't what's happening.  Is this a problem with the Take Lanes functionality, or am I confused about how the Take Lanes are supposed to work?

Can someone enlighten me?  Thanks.

If you record in Comping mode, the clip in T1 is automatically going to be muted for the duration of the clip in T2. You can unmute it by clicking it with the Mute tool, or selecting it, and using keyboard shortcut 'K' to toggle the mute state.

If a clip is muted, soloing the lane that contains it will override that muting, and you should hear it without having to also solo the track. I believe there's an issue that on re-opening a project saved in that state, the track will initially be silent until you toggle the take lone solo off and on again, but it doesn't sound like you're encountering that.

In any case, if you want to be able to hear one or both tracks without having to unmute clips or solo take lanes, change you record mode to Sound on Sound (right-click the Record button in the Transport module for options).

I recall seeing some good videos on take lanes at groove3.com and perhaps on CakeTV.

Hello.  Thank you for your useful replies.  I will try these things and report back.

Like brundlefly said, sounds like it has to do with comping.  When you have multiple takes stacked on top of each other, it assumes you want to hear only one of the tracks.  You can click toward the bottom of the track to promote it (cursor looks like a stack of poker chips), and all the other takes will be greyed out and muted.  If you want to hear both, or multiple takes that are all stacked together, you can control+click on each take so you can promote multiple clips and hear them simultaneously (if all the takes are promoted, I think the soloing of take lanes should work).

Hey!  It works just like he said it does!

So, when I record multiple takes on the same track, previous takes automatically have Clip Mute applied.  To hear those previous takes, I need to right-click the relevant take and unmute it (or keyboard shortcut "k").  Right-clicking the Record button gives me options for what to do with multiple takes on a single lane.

Problem solved - my confusion has been cleared up.  Thanks guys!!
