• SONAR
  • Separate each instrument on Addictive Drums onto it's own track (SONAR Platinum)

I am looking to insert an Addictive Drums kit into a project and put each instrument (bass drum, snare, HH etc) on it's own track
(ie: track1: HH, Track 2: bass drum, Track 3: snare etc etc).

I have followed some tutorials and, when inserting, I check (MIDI Source, Synth Track Folder and All Synth Audio Outputs:Mono), and that does create a bunch of tracks.  But there isn't a "record" button on each track so I cannot record whatever instrument onto it's assigned track.  It all just records the MIDI onto one track (the last one).

I notice there is only a record button on the first "track" (the folder) and last track (MIDI) and all the ones in the middle (the particular instruments) have no record button.

I have also tried recording and then dragging the recorded MIDI notes from the MIDI track onto the track it SHOULD be on but that doesn't work either because once I drag it off the MIDI track onto the "Bass Drum" track (for instance) it should be on, no sound comes out.

Any thoughts?

These tracks are for separate audio outputs. You can add more midi tracks (or clone one that you have), but generally you don't need it, because you can do almost everything with midi in one midi track. Also you can use drum map, here is map and project template for AD2:

monstaar, how are you proposing to "record" these drums?

Adq is quite right in that the separate tracks you've created for the different drums, kick, snare, hat etc are for audio, but if you've set it up correctly, these will be triggered from your (single) midi track

It's the midi you'll be recording, and dragging the midi track to the audio won't work because midi is just data - it's not audio.

Right ho.
@Bristol_Jonesey:
For instance, I was hoping to have each MIDI instrument assigned to a different track.
I generally record each MIDI instrument separately;  HH first, then snare, then BD etc etc. so I wanted each of those instruments on their own track for ease of editing.
Initially, I figured I would just insert a new instance of AD for each instrument (BD, HH, snare etc) but that didn't work out either.

When inserting the Addictive Drums VST, it gives one the option of creating all of those tracks specific to each instrument, so I assumed that when all the tracks were created, the MIDI data that was recorded would be on the specific track if I chose that particular track and recorded the part (HH, BD snare etc) on that particular track.And the tracks do not seem to be audio tracks (see attached image) it looks to be MIDI.

It's somewhat confusing because if one cannot record each specific MIDI instrument to its own track, then what is the point of being able to create all of those MIDI instrument specific tracks in the first place?  That is to say, why does SONAR have the option of creating all of those tracks if one cannot do anything with them?
It creates an individual track for HH, BD, snare, etc but does not allow one to record the MIDI data for each of those instruments on their respective track.  That just seems pointless.

Perhaps I am just not understanding the concept.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU for your responses!

@Adq

I will try that method.

I was just hoping I could get each instrument on its own track for east of editing.

Thank you for that link.

The previous posters are correct. The tracks that have been created by the insertion of AD are for the audio that WILL be produced. What you need to do to create the scenario you desire is to now insert a MIDI track in your project for each if the kit pieces. Then, as you build up your drum track one piece at a time, you will achieve what you are aiming for.

In AD2, you are of course selecting the little drop down arrow at the bottom of each kit piece and selecting 'separate out - whatever you choose', and the drop down arrow turns green ?

monstaar888, it is not midi tracks, it is audio tracks associated with AD2 audio outputs (you should be careful with this also, because AD2 has mono outputs for individual instruments, and stereo outputs for OH, Room, Bus and Master). You use them to process different instruments by different plug-ins (eq, compressors, etc.) But there are a lot more (70+) individual sounds that AD2 could play, and which are associated with different midi notes, I don't think you want to create 70+ midi tracks for them.
Why do you want different midi tracks for different sounds? I can understand if it were audio samples that you put directly on tracks, but with midi it much more comfortable to have all midi on one track. You could do all the same things, edit, move, change velocity, even solo and mute individual sounds with drum maps, but in addition you can see all drums together in PRV.

I've never understood how one can/could easily edit a drum break if every hit is on a different track.

Just to clarify for the OP:

You edit the Midi track (single) for performance related criteria - velocity, timing, hits etc

You edit the Audio tracks (plural) for things like EQ, Compression, Reverb etc.

You instruct AD2 (and any similar drum synth) to send all of the data associated with a certain key (or keys) to a given Audio Track.

To make like easier (Ha!) you can set up a drum map in Sonar's PRV.
