  • Separate each instrument on Addictive Drums onto it's own track (SONAR Platinum) (p.2)

As was suggested, just use a drum map on one midi track for all the kit peices.    You can still record everything piecemeal, but once all tracks are recorded, they will all reside on one midi track.  I can't imagine how you would edit with any consistency if your drum grooves and fills were on 15 different midi tracks!  Try these suggestions and I think you will see it works very well.

Counter to most folks here, I also drive a single AD2 instrument with 3-5 separate MIDI tracks.
Just create a new MIDI track and assign the output to the AD2 instance. There's no mystery.

As to *why* you might want to do that, well, that's irrelevant to this discussion.

To the OP - if you find yourself repeatedly creating the same the track layout and plug-in config with a synth like AD2, do it one time and save it away as a track template. As mentioned above, the standard SONAR Insert Soft Synth Options dialog only makes provision for one MIDI track but it is a simple matter to add as many as you like and point them to the synth. Once setup, create a template.

In regard to separate MIDI tracks for those who are wondering about my methodology.

For instance, I have a DR-880.
On track 1 (for instance) I will record the High Hats.
Track 2 I record BD
Track 3 I record Snares
Track 4 Crashes
Track 4 Splash
etc etc.

If there is a fill that involves more than one instrument (snare, tom1, tom2), that fill (with all instruments involved) will have its own track.  And I will put each fill on its own track and name it accordingly.

For me, that way is MUCH easier to edit and manipulate each instrument as opposed to searching through a bunch of data all on one MIDI track.  Yes, I could go to Event View and filter but again, I find it easier to do it on separate tracks.
Unhappily, it seems AD doesn't like that.

Also, mind you, I JUST switched over to SONAR from CW Pro Audio 9 so I think there is a different mindset and methodology with earlier versions of CW.
I have used CW since like 1991 and have never used another DAW.

THANK YOU everyone for your valuable insights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are not right, you can easily do it, just add more midi tracks, or clone your existing midi track.
Also keep in mind that it is easier to find sounds if you have properly set up drum map, because you can see sound names in PRV. And if you want to use all AD2 sounds like rim shots, various hi-hat sounds, perc sounds, it will be not so easy without drum map. But there is no problem to do it on many different midi tracks.

Cool.
I don't understand what a drum map is yet, but tonight I will start learning.

Thanks for that advice.  I look forward to figuring it out.

Here is the problem I am encountering when using drum map:

I record the High Hats.
Then when I want to record the BD, when I hit the record button, I cannot hear the HH.

What am I missing?

Maybe the wrong recording mode. Right-click the record button and make sure it is set to Sound on Sound. Although I am not convinced with the way you describe how you build up the drums if multiple MIDI tracks may still work better.

The Step Sequencer is another option you may want to look at, since visually it is easier to monitor and build upon. If you click the SS icon in the upper right of the AD UI you may find it easier to loop several bars and build a kit pattern there.
