Hi everybody, just a quick 'dumb' question regarding our Cakewalk software assets. Ok so I got that email a couple of weeks ago, saying I need to sign up to Bandlab otherwise I might lose access to my original Cakewalk software assets...what happens now? Are these assets being transferred to my Bandlab account or will they stay where they've always been?

Interesting times, me thinks. Whilst, I'm happy that Sonar lives (Cakewalk by Bandlab is a crap name by the way...too unwieldy), gutting the heart of the program, all the secondary licensed stuff is troubling. It turns, what was one of the most complete software studio instruments into a less than finished pro product. Although I get what is going on, and because I've already brought Platinum and will stick with that version till it breaks, it won't really affect me. Still, it's concerning if for whatever reason we lose access to our original Cakewalk assets via the server going down or we can't authorize our downloaded assets via online activation.

Anyway thanks in advance, I was just musing with the above paragraph...been keeping an eye on all of the proceedings. Bandlab site looks alright, and I can see what they're up to.

Go ahead and register for with your same email that you used here for now. This was basically an early release to keep the hungry natives appeased. More info, content and updates coming soon. So register now hold your parking spot and upgrade when you're ready. The kinks will hopefully be worked out soon.

As for the name. The company use to be Twelve Tone Systems. The product use to be called Cakewalk (was midi only). When they added audio tracks it became Cakewalk Pro Audio. People assumed the company name was Cakewalk and Pro Audio was the product name. Like Akai Mpc or Propellerhead Reason. So they Changed the Company name to match expectations. At the same time, what would have become Pro Audio 10 became Sonar. Later what should have been Sonar 10 became Sonar X1. ..and you probably know the rest of the story. So...technically the product just went back to it's original name.

There is at least 2 threads a day here on this topic. You should take the time to read a little and you will see that there is nothing to worry about. You do need to follow through and register. You don't have to use the new version but most of us have found it is a small upgrade from the November release and are happily using it now.

The new version is stripped down because all those extras cost money which is why Splat was worth $400.

So I try to download CBB and get stopped by a "tip jar"/paywall. What's up with that? I thought that if you had a licensed version of Sonar the switchover was free.

CbB is free to all BandLab account holders. The Tip Jar pops up at the end of the install process. Tipping is optional.

Nope. Tip jar pops up at beginning. Bandlab Assistant just sits there saying "downloading 0/1" for an hour, then goes back to original  screen.

This has nothing to do with the tip jar. There are a couple of threads about download issues. Make sure you are running the latest version of BandLab Assistant v3.0.8. Sometimes is it necessary to quit are restart BA. Others have had issues with slow internet connections.

+1 The tip jar is completely optional and isn't the reason why a download would fail. Quite a few people have reported issues with the downloader. If the download connection breaks for some reason, it doesn't seem to be able to resume, so you have to start again. I'm sure this will be fixed before too long.

This whole thing about resume is important for those of us on a slow download, and unfortunately CCC never incorporated a resume feature - so will BA do that ? Here’s hoping with all fingers well and truel crossed.

I wasn't aware that CCC didn't resume either. I'm lucky that I have fast, fairly reliable broadband where I am and have never had an issue. I would have thought any download system made in the last 10 years would automatically resume. I had major problems last time I tried to download NI Komplete via Native Access - downloads kept stopping, but at least they could be resumed! I would think it's something that BL will sort out as it's been one of the biggest problems I've seen reported here in the forums, and if people think the download isn't working because they haven't contributed to the tip jar, that sounds like a bit of a problem to me, and I'm sure BL wouldn't want people thinking that. They will want as many people using Cake as possible without being put off or not being able to even download it.
