Count me in. I have never lost a project, but I have lost SNAP on a couple occasions (never to return to that project) and a few other anomalies. I used to get the anomalies (small little things hardly worth mentioning) with other versions as well, so that is nothing new - but losing Snap can bring a project to a quick death during the editing stage.

I always save multiple files (versioning) so I can go back to a working state when I need to. I might lose a little work, but never the entire project.

i have a current project that went "corrupt" seemingly for no reason; and stupid me, a few years ago, saved a finished project as a .cwb, and i tried opening it up yesterday and alas, it too was corrupt

I've had several over the years. Thankfully none that I deem as, OMG! Backing up and  versioning is a beautiful thing.

Save using the number system.. That said I too have had corrupt projects in X1 alot more so than any other version of Sonar or any Daw that I use.. Magnetic strength still is flakey I noticed it set to medium a few times..  There's still a zoom bug in Sonar at different zoom levels snap works unexpected been there before X1.. The Pro Channel issue I have not seen then again I haven't noticed it , which now makes me nervous thinking I have to go back and check out all my PC modules to see if something not active.. Not very productive.. I don't wanna sound like a lack luster but so far X1 is still buggy as hell , I have not had great success with X1 at all. In fact BUB is 100% accurate when he said as the project get's more complicated/more work, it seems to get corrupt and crash. Obviously were not alone!!! and X1 still has many problems that needs to be addressed . I feel like a year has almost gone by and my productions have come to hault since X1 .. I have something like 10- 20 projects which I would of finished in 8.5.3  and had out for publishing but X1 just seems to get the best of me. I sure hope we dont see a repeat again..

I have had a few crashes with both 8.5 and X1. My projects only contain 1 maybe 2 instances of the following synths, Omnisphere, Trillian, Zebra 2.5, Rapture, Session drummer 3.
I just had a crash the other night when I inserted DIM Pro into a project with those synths I mentioned above. A fatal Error message came up as the project froze. I was able to close Sonar without saving anything, but I cannot Insert Dim pro into this project without it crashing. I have not reported any of these crashes to Cakewalk because the projects are easy to recreate and I have not lost any tracks.

Just had one this morning and was surprised to find this thread when I cam e to the forums.  Not sure if it's technically corrupted, but the associated vocal tracks have mysteriously gone missing, and the ones Sonar offers to load in its place are bringing up message "not the same name as original source, are you sure you want to do this . . ."

Don't know if I could have deleted the clips inadvertently without noticing or if something went wrong with the software.  I have recent enough backups, but the other backups from that date had similar problems.

Corrupt projects have always been a danger, and every version of SONAR has corrupted projects for me. A search of the forum will show issues with corrupt projects going back at least to SONAR 4.

As long as the CWP file format is closed and undocumented and no tools exist for editing or repairing it, this will always be the case. The only strategy for protecting yourself is frequent backups.

Backing up projects is a pain because they're so large. However, you can get a lot of insurance by simply copying the .cwp file. A single corrupt wave file is much easier to recover from than a corrupt project file.

I would like to continue to use Sonar

In the 6 years ive had my share. About 2 or 3, but if you back up your projects like your suppose to, you wont have any problems.
All programs can get corrupt. This is why you back up every session and every project. It shouldn't even be an issue. Just back up your stuff.

If you dont back up, your just asking for trouble, as eventually the hard drive will go or a virus will inhabit your pc or some 1's and 0's will get corrupt.

I agree 100% with this.  Two of the most sound pieces of computer program advice I have ever recieved (especially when dealing with creating something)

1) Select to effect
2) SAVE often.

Life has been good since ;)

Thanks Mick, One other thing that can make you loose your project. Fire and theft. Keep 3 copies of each project/session and always have one copy off site, in case of fire or theft. CD and DVDs are the best and cheapest medium for this, but hard drives are getting smaller and smaller and cheaper and cheaper.

May or may not help you, but...

  • I had a couple of projects that would not open.  Sonar would crash while trying to open them.
  • Determined cause was an issue with one or more plug-ins that were in tracks (that I did not intentionally add).
  • Solution hold down SHIFT while clicking the project to load.  Then you can pick one by one which plug-ins to load, and avoid any that are suspicious.
