  • Small latency setting causes Sonar crash!

Hi, guys! Today I wrestled for a while getting a project that used to run at 176 samples in ASIO to open without crashing. I found that I had to raise the latency to 256 now to even open. I have had instances where the latency was causing pops and crackling but never just outright would not open. Thankfully, I figured it out and saved the project but I had to open a blank project and re-set the latency, then close SPLAT and re-open the project before it would load. Nothing has been changed and now all the sudden latency problems! Anyone had this problem or is it just my day!!   LOL

I am superstitious about changing things like that:   definitely save, close, and I usually reboot too ... too many mysterious things go wrong when messing around with those kinds of parameters.

+1. The sample buffer parameter is the fundamental link between your audio interface and computer. When it can't transfer data fast enough, anything can happen...including some audio effects that are probably worth sampling for future use in horror movie soundtracks

Another report where "crashing" is ambiguous. Sonar failed to open? Or Sonar was open and the project failed to load?  The project opened briefly and then closed itself with or without an error message? Or the project started to open and Sonar stopped and froze, or the Sonar process ended and the Sonar window closed or???

The expected behavior when opening a project where the audio buffer is too low to process the project is that the project loads normally and dropouts occur when it is running or in an extreme case the audio engine stalls. Failing to open at all suggests another issue.

The strange thing is the problem persisted until I went thru the steps I posted. After the project finally loaded after re-setting the latency to a higher value, I could then lower the latency back to the original setting and all is well! I re-saved the project at the lower latency setting and it opens everytime! I file this experience under what my good friend Paul Hornsby calls it. DIGITAL WIERDNESS!

I had some "digititus" yesterday.
My FW1884 control surface would "update" (faders would move and mute/solo, etc.)
when opening a project, but then it wouldn't send/receive.
Closed Sonar, re-booted, all the usual suspect stuff.
Finally opened a different project and everyone is/was happy.
Still having some midi latency though, even with the RME at 48 samples.
Gonna try the "blank" project, insert one VSTi etc.
Little "off topic", but maybe not.
This WAS right after the update 7 install, not saying that's the problem, just sayin'...
(i'm sure the "doctor" will advise a full win update, drivers; blah, blah, blah)
