  • Importing OMF's into X2a

I havent had to use OMF's since 8.5 as I have been on a feature film for a couple of years. (ugggh!)

There was always a tangled web of issues with regards to OMF imports due to the very messy nature of them (cheers adobe)

Anyway, I had a new client give me OMF's this week, non embedded (which works best). All at 48k 24 bit (the usual industry standard)

Sonar asks me to locate the first file, I point it to the file and then CRASH! "Sonar has stopped working" with no option to send an error report.

What a crock!

So, I fire open Pro Tools and it works no problem first time.

The OMF's came from Final Cut Pro and I even talked the client through the correct settings.

So, Dear Sonar, please improve OMF compatability please (along with all the other functionalilty that us Sound Designers/Scorists need to do our job)

Have you sent in a problem report?

 Yup.

OMF import didn't work for me either. I forget the error I got. I ended up just dragging everything in one clip at a time.

Make sure to file a problem report if enough of us shout about and whinge then they might sort it out...(or not as the case may be)

I am digging into this - no solutions yet - it appears that the crashes may be caused by one or more settings chosen during the EXPORT that created the OMF files you are trying to import.

I do not have substantiated information to post here yet, so please bear with me.  I also only just finished my first cup of coffee and large swaths of neurons in my brain are just flat out oversleeping thus far today.

So, I will post firther as soon as possible.  In the meantime, can you please look into more detail as to how the OMF files were created in the first place?  (things like embedded wave files versus links to external files, fades, etc...)

Heya Bob,

As mentioned above the OMF's are non embedded (embedded OMFs by nature through up all sorts of issues so I never use them)
48k 24 bit (sample & bit rates match)
Omf is 829kb
Reference Audio files x 15, AIF format (Sonar will import the AIF's no problem on their own through FILE>IMPORT, so no corruption there)

As far as I can see in PT 10.3.2 (Where I am opening the OMF) there are no fades.
Upon importing into PT tho I did have to manually relink the audio to the OMF, it was at this stage in Sonar where Sonar crashed.

I might try putting the audio files in the same folder as the OMF as when you create an OMF it puts the audio in its own dedicated folder.

Right, putting the audio files into the same folder as the OMF master file crashes Sonar instantly.

Unfortunately I have bigger fish to fry at the moment and I have a feeling OMF may have been abandoned. I've seen quite a few people mention problems with OMFs before. I actually didn't expect it to work due to that but figured I'd give it a try anyway just to go through the process and maybe make the file transfer a little easier. I don't deal with clients or transfers very often and if I did I would probably just get them to export the raw waves for me. From what I understand the only extra data OMF retains are volume and pan levels and that's simple enough to workaround whether through old style notes on the levels or simply starting from scratch. Using the track export from Nuendo surprisingly (surprising to me anyway) even retained the time locations of the clips. I actually didn't necessarily want that but I thought it was kind of neat.

Right now my biggest issue is with transient markers and I may end up calling support (long distance) to see if there is ANYTHING I can do to alleviate some of the weirdness they seem to cause.

Fair Enough Beepster!

Unfortunately for me dealing with OMF's is mission critical as I am getting audio dialogue tracks from Video Editors exported from Final Cut Pro or Premiere. Oh well! Roll on X2b!!

Let us know how you get on with TM's.
