I'm guessing that video programs add more metadata that sonar does not like. I import OMF fromother audio programs just fine

OMF has been sketchy for me at best. There are some things you can do to improve compatibility when exporting but for importing it's a mystery for me why some files work while others don't.
Your best best is probably asking for broadcast waves, at least they'll be in the right spot relative to each other.

I'd like to add my voice to the cries for help on the OMF import issue.

I have been attempting to import OMF V2's that came from Adobe Audition.  The symptoms are exactly the same as the other reports; first file/track, then crash. These same failing OMF's import into both Pro Tools 9 (Windows) and Logic Pro X.

Is there some test scenario or export option that I should check to narrow down (or even fix) this problem?

Same thing here. Any news for X3/Platinum?
