Cakewalk article says regarding Windows 10:
"Lower Latency:  15ms lower roundtrip latency using WASAPI (shared mode)."
 
Does that mean in Windows 10, WASAPI might now be lower latency than ASIO?

I've never successfully used WASAPI with any interface- usb, or "on-board".  
What's it all about?

If I remember correctly the article you quoted said 15ms lower latency placing it near to that of ASIO.
 I tried the wasapi drivers when I had Windows 10( I have since rolled back to 7) and the reported latency was the same as ASIO the way I had it set up. I didn't gain or lose so I went back to ASIO.

I am getting 6ms round trip with Windows 7 64bit (fully patched) set to ASIO using an ASUS XONAR DS PCI card driven by Sonar Platinum (fully patched).  I am not experiencing any dropouts , clicks or pops during payback.

I do not plan to upgrade to Windows 10 at this time (This may change in the medium future)

WASapi is supposed to be the Windows equivalent to ASIO, and up to a point it is not too bad. I have used it myself and the latency in low level projects is pretty decent. But ASIO it is not. One thing though you can use it alongside ASIO (although NOT within the same Audio software)...mind you that was in W7, not sure about 8 and 10.

I wish I could could 6ms, I have Dell M4600 Workstation, Win7 64bit, and using either Behringer X32 X-UF sound card or M-Audio ProTrack interface, I think am at 15ms round trip. That is almost at the point of "not usable for live performance using soft synths".
 

According to MS themselves ASIO is still the 'best experience for DAWs' in Win10. Unless the driver is dodgy always use ASIO. ASIO bypasses a few layers so performance should be better.

I have some projects running as low as 2.5ms with ASIO. Standard for me on a heavy project is usually around 5ms. Tried WASAPI and could never get anywhere close as ASIO.

Thank you, Doktor, I think that "puts it to bed". I will not have to waste time comparing ASIO to WASAPI in Win10. 

The only thing I'd add is that a Microsoft representative implied they would continue work on lowering Windows native latency and hope it will be equivalent to ASIO eventually. I think WASAPI is intended primarily to give consumers who don't even know what ASIO is a much better experience than MME.
