• SONAR
  • applying volume automation directly on track? (p.3)

I think I just figured out a way to do this that will print the effect onto the clip in place... but I'm not 100% sure if it will follow any envelopes on the track.

If you select a track or clip, go to the global Process menu (at the top of the Sonar scree) and select Apply Effect it allows you to print any effects in the track's effect bin right onto the selected clip(s). So if you just wanted volume you could use any of the methods described in this thread to create a volume envelope using a plugin effect or FX Chain. Then use the Apply Effect option to print the it. You would want to disable any other effects in the bin you don't want to be included in the render (then turn them back on after). Since it's volume and effects tend to react to volume changes you may want to pay close attention to your signal chain/order in which you do this.

I'm also unsure if Apply Effect will indeed include any envelope changes to that effect but IMO it SHOULD otherwise that would be a little annoying.

Just something to play around with.

Now that I've looked at that option I think I'd like to see this feature get a little bit of improvement. Like give more options right in the Apply Effect dialog and generally make it all more robust and user tweakable. It seems to be a reasonable workaround for the limitations/annoyances of the whole Bounce to Clip/Track stuff.

I would would much prefer an in place render option for tracks and clips where you can just right click on a clip or track, choose the elements you want printed (like Bounce to Track and Export does) and have the changes applied to the specific clip. I don't why I keep thinking we can already do this but I'm pretty sure it's because of the Process stuff (as in I've seen many of these in place renders happen but via the Process menu).

Anyway... I'm sure OP already has his solution but thought it was interesting and might give folks some stuff to play around with. I know I'll be keeping it in my bag of tricks now that I realize it can apply FX Bin stuff. It would be even better if it had an option to include PC and Track strip options (and whatever else might come into play)... and of course an option to include/exlclude any envelopes on the track or maybe even live automation (during an audible real time Apply Effect procedure).

Meh.

I did not know that. I saw it was mentioned earlier in this thread and I will be investigating that later tonight. I may switch to that technique. Thanks for mentioning it.

There may still be some advantages to the method you're using. I don't know. I just thought you'd be interested to know about offset mode...

...and I see from scook's Piet that the shortcut has been changed...? I guess I gavent had need of it for a while but I could have sworn............

Maybe I re-added the shortcut and don't remember?

offset mode (letter O key)

The keyboard shortcut for Offset mode was dropped in the new SONAR. Toggle Offset mode using the Mix module or add a custom keyboard shortcut.

Thanks for alerting me Steve...

Either I've added the shortcut (and don't remember) or I simply gavent used it for a while...

I'm gonna look tonight and see...

Although in the minority, I've been an offset mode fan from day one.   Main reason being that it's at the same point in gain structure as the volume envelope itself, so I'm not affecting anything other than pure "volume" without having to go through the selection process to move the entire envelope + nodes.

I assign my volume envelopes to the free fader plug "GFader." http://www.gvst.co.uk/gfader.htm
That way I can adjust the overall volume of the track with the normal track fader.

Offset mode simply changes the function of the normal track fader to control static offset instead of fader variations.

FYI the reason why the shortcut was taken out was to avoid the "Automation doesn't work! SONAR broken! Faders all stay in the same position!" posts when people hit O by accident.

<sheesh>...

Yeah, I remember the topic of removing the shortcut now...

But then we should remove all the shortcuts as any could be hit inadvertently and cause unexpected behavior...

Much as I had trouble with the additional activation points for smarttool when x was released... The learning process took a bit more as we had to gain finer control of our actions... They didn't change that (thankfully... I'd rather learn and have the new advantages), but it's not a problem as it's easy to re-instate...

I have often considered setting up shortcut schemes for specific tasks. Essentially remove ALL the shortcuts except the ones I need for a specific project period.

A perfect example... I use the keyboard to control transport while recoding (with a guitar strapped to me). I would eliminate EVERYTHING except the necessary transport controls (at least everything that responds to a simple keystroke as opposed to multi key bindings which are no problem).

That way I know if I'm recording with my eyes closed and just reaching out to hit the R and Space keys (as I am prone to do) I don't have to worry about screwing something up.

Surprisingly though I rarely hit the wrong keys at any time any more and the only one I seem to is the F key which just (albeit annoyingly) triggers the "Fit" command and makes all my track tiny... and that doesn't actually happen when recording... just when I mixing and constantly hitting D to open the Dock.
