  • 64 bit Platinum doesn't work with many control surfaces and Win 8 - why? - SOLVED

I've been trying to transition to 64 bit Platinum and have run into a big snag. I'm using Win 8.1 Pro. I have 2 midi devices one that's included with the AVB Ultralite sound card and the MidiSport.

I open preferences, choose control surfaces, choose studiomix, then choose the midi ports. Hit apply and the ports I chose do not show up in the preferences control surface window like they do in 32 bit Platinum. In fact the ports disappear.

If I delete the control surface and then start all over using the other midi devise – same thing. I went ahead and tried a few more control surfaces and the same problem is there for Edirol, Tascam US 428 and Radial. It works fine with ACT and Mackie. So this is far worse than only Studiomix.

Does anyone have a clue what's going on? And more importantly has anyone gotten control surfaces like the ones mentioned above to work with Win 8?

Have you gone to the M-Audio and MOTU sites to download the latest drivers that are compatible with your 64-bit Windows 8.1 OS?

yes, thanks for the suggestion.
Are you using Win 8? If so try what I did above and see if the several problem control surfaces can even be assigned to midi ins and outs. Try whatever midi devices you have. 32 bit works just fine, it's only 64 bit.

If Input/Output ports disappear, you normally also should see the name of the Control Surface plug-in in brackets. That means either you do not have 64bit version of the plug-in or it can not be loaded.

The list of available Control Surface plug-ins is common for 32 and 64 bit, but 64 Sonar can not use 32 bit plug-ins (bit bridges used to run 32bit VSTs in 64bit hosts can not be used for CS plug-ins).

If 32 bit works, and 64 bit does not, it's drivers or maybe not keeping windows update up to date.

So Cakewalk has abandoned StudioMix for use in 64 bit Platinum, a product they helped develop? There's no way to use it in 64 bit? It seems there could be a solution, if there was a desire from Cakewalk to fix this.

From what I understand Cakewalk created the control surface plugins and they could update them to 64 bit. Maybe it would require the midi interfaces to be 64 bit, but the studiomix itself only is receiving midi info. Midi info is not 32 bit or 64 bit, it's only midi info, so from what you said it does appear that Cakewalk has simply dropped the ball.

I am a a big fan of Sonar, but for whatever reason its support of control surfaces in general is fairly ordinary. Just ask ayone that has tried to use automap for the last 8 years!

I need to retract my post about 64 bit Platinum not working with some control surfaces. Keni Fink has been using StudioMix just fine with under Win 7. It appears to be a problem with Win8 64 bit or something in my system.

So far no one using Win8 has chimed in. If you have Win 8, please run the simple test in my original post. You don't have to own a control surface to simply see if under Preferences / control surfaces, the midi ports disappear after hitting apply.
