gmp,
Did you see my reply in http://forum.cakewalk.com...tudioMix-m3281783.aspx

yes
>>Make sure you don't have 32 bit drivers installed for it, only 64 bit drivers.
That used to be my issue with my Faderport.<<

AS far as my midi interface. It's built into the AVB Ultralite sound card and this product has only be out for about 1 year and in the install, it makes no mention of 32 or 64 bit, so I assume it's taken for granted that the midi interface is 64 bit.

Besides keep in mind Keni Fink is running Plat-x64 with studiomix and Win 7 with no problems. I'd like to know if anyone can use the above control surfaces in my post that all are not working in Win 8

why oh why oh why isn't there a forum sticky for all the generic advice?

Not all general advises make sense for all devices. For example, StudioMix has no drivers, independent from OS version. But it has special Control Surface plug-in for Sonar. This plug-in is not OS or Sonar version specific, but it should have the same bitness as Sonar.

So Cakewalk has abandoned StudioMix for use in 64 bit Platinum, a product they helped develop? There's no way to use it in 64 bit? It seems there could be a solution, if there was a desire from Cakewalk to fix this.

I have StudioMix and I am slowly constructing a preset for it (no public version yet, I have several "peaces" for transport section, faders and encoders, but I still have not composed them together). See related thread on my site. Its functionality is going to be far above the level of original plug-in. Everyone is welcome to contribute ideas, wishes, etc.

If Input/Output ports disappear, you normally also should see the name of the Control Surface plug-in in brackets. That means either you do not have 64bit version of the plug-in or it can not be loaded.

The list of available Control Surface plug-ins is common for 32 and 64 bit, but 64 Sonar can not use 32 bit plug-ins (bit bridges used to run 32bit VSTs in 64bit hosts can not be used for CS plug-ins).

What you're saying makes sense, yet it doesn't account for the fact that in Win 7x64 StudioMix does work. So actually since you've noticed the same thing with the ports disappearing, I believe this is a bug in Platinum and Win8x64 otherwise Win 7x64 would have the same problem.

Since you have Win 8x64, please try this simple test. You don't have to have any of these control surfaces installed to do this test. Open preferences, use the X to delete any control surfaces you have. Then choose control surfaces (yellow icon), choose studiomix, then choose the midi ports. Hit ok and see if the ports disappear.

Then try manually adding the ports, hit apply, and see if they disappear. The same problem is there for Edirol, Tascam US 428 and Radial. It works fine with ACT and Mackie. If the ports disappear like they do with me, this is clearly a bug with Platinum and Win 8, since this does not happen in Win7x64. Please try this.

Thanks,

That works for me. I mean I have StudioMix, added StudioMix as control surface plug-in (for the first time, "stock" plug-in does not have the functionality I want and it also does not play nicely with my device because of fader noise and encoders bugs, may be my device is worse then normal) and everything works as expected.

Platinum has problems with Control Surface distribution. It simply does not install some of them.

  • Windows/Microsoft has nothing to do with that. These plug-ins are not windows drivers, they do not use any windows version specific interfaces. They use Sonar interface (which has no significant changes since Sonar 6, StudioMix plug-in does not use Sonar X extended functions in any case) and MS runtime (some are installed with Windows, some comes with Sonar and other programs. Cakewalk recommends update all of them from MS site, there are several, for different compiler versions used to build different Sonar components)
  • in my case everything works because I had Sonar X3 64bit installed. StudioMix.dll (in C:\CakeWalk\Shared Surfaces) has "Product version X3". If you see StudioMix in the list but can not assign ports, your installation either has 32bit version of StudioMix.dll from some 32bit Sonar (most probable) or incompatible MS runtime (rather small probability). StudioMix could not appear in the list without some Sonar version installed it. And Platinum should work with whatever version of these plug-ins when they are 64 bit. Platinum delivers ACT and Mackie (dated 11/12.2014), that is why they work for you
  • to make everything working, you just need the plug-in in 64bit (from any Windows x64 Sonar x64 versions). For example copy it from working installation of Win7x64 (in case Sonar there is also 64bit). Put it into some folder (does not matter which, but NOT VST and not the place where you have 32bit version) and then using good old command line in that folder execute "regsvr32 StudioMix.dll".

I'm one of the lucky ones that have a pretty good StudioMix. It's a little quirky, but I've learned all the workarounds and it works really fine for mixing automation.

Thanks for your detailed explanation. I'm trying to make the transition to 64 bit, yet haven't done so yet on a regular basis. Here's the deal I own X1, X3, and Platinum, but right now 64 bit Platinum is the only 64 bit one installed and it's the June of 2015 version.

So as far as finding a good .DLL, I think I should instead install the 64 bit version of Platinum. Or am I not understanding you correctly? Are you saying that to fix the problem I should install 64 bit X3, because Platinum doesn't have the correct 64 bit DLL for studiomix?

I appreciate your extensive knowledge on this subject and await your advice.

My faders are periodically sending "movements" on there own. I have seen other users have that problem as well.
In addition, by encoders are sometimes sending left movement when I turn them right. So when I pan right, for example, it is not always smoothly moving.

There was many reports that Platinum has no (or at least had no) VS plug-ins. May be some other are also not there. I have installed it after X3, so I am not sure what is included and what is not. It can happened you  need X3 64bit installation to get them. From what I know, just installing minimal X3 with these plug-ins and then reinstalling Platinum should not trigger any trouble. But as I have written, it is possible to install X3 somewhere else, copy these DLLs and register them.

Excellent! To be safe I'll install X3 64 bit. Since the Platinum 64 bit version I have is old I'll then update it also. I'll let you know how it all works out. I'm so glad that there's a solution.

Thanks a million!

Thank you, azslow3. I installed 64 bit X3 and now StudioMix works fine in Platinum 64 bit. I hope Cakewalk sees this post and fixes this oversight in Platinum. What about the poor suckers that don't have X3?
