Being unfamilar with the term 'motorboating' I googled. The link below is the result. Stop your ****in' man - I wish my copy of Sonar had this feature!

Good to know I am not the only one missing out Ken. Probably all for the best productivity wise though:)

Occasionally I will get motorboating on my audio interface, usually occurs when I add some CPU intensive look ahead plugin to an already taxed project. I just reboot, restart the project, then it allows me to add that extra plugin.

. . . but I have never had motorboating occur from merely opening a project as you describe.
I think it's caused by a plugin (or too many) that your audio interface can't handle, or a buffer setting too low, but for me it usually happens when hitting the play button, sending the audio into an overload. Scares the hell out of my cat. Sometimes I ask too much from my 15 year old soundcard. What audio interface do you have ?

Your Google was luckier than mine (reminder to self turn off safe search):

I must admit I never really got the definition of "motorboating" in Sonar clear, although I vaguely recall someone posted an audio sample some time in the distant past. It clearly was not the same as the analogue phenomenon of the same name, and it seems to have been used over the years by different people to describe phenomena that were not the same phenomenon. I have not seen the term in a long time here, and it has reportedly been fixed in the past versions. Rather than use a poorly defined shorthand for what people are hearing perhaps it would be best to describe it.

Seriously though... something is going wonky with your system resources. Some optimization and/or resource management and/or system troubleshooting is in order.

Just like the "Zipper" noise. I THINK I have experienced that (and I think I've experienced motorboating... and not the pleasant kind... which lucky me I've also experienced in my previously cool guy life) but these terms are, as you said, rather ill defined and probably misused.

I'd say up your buffers and/or load in safe mode (and in safe mode progressively reintroduce plugs until it starts happening) and/or update whatever drivers may be out of date (most likely interface drivers especially if you have upgraded your OS) and/or go into your power management options/startup items and disable anything that could be interfering and/or check for hardware failures and/or and/or and/or... etc.

Just troubleshooting really.

Maybe we can ask it as a feature request for the next update....
