Firewire interface? Are you using a dedicated firewire card with the recommended Texas Instruments chipset (or if you are using the motherboard's firewire does the motherboard have a TI chipset)?

Since it sounds like a prebuilt Acer then they likely did not consider the firewire needs of audio applications such as Sonar and did NOT use the best FW chipset.

Also watch out for "bridging" versus "native" issues when dealing with "daughterboards" (PCI cards). If you invest in a firewire card with a proper TI chipset make sure it uses a PCIe slot... not a legacy PCI slot which will likely be "bridged" which can cause issues like you are describing (and happened to me when trying to use a legacy PCI card and slot on my modern motherboard... which is why I bought a USB interface).

So yeah... if you are using firewire then make sure you have the BEST connection for firewire... which is likely a dedicated PCIe card using an appropriate Texas Instrument chipset (I do not know the exact model number offhand but it is easily found on google because this is an known issue with Firewire).

Cheers.

PS: Also if you are using the Acer installed programs and OS you NEED to do some tweaking. Such as disabling startup programs, removing bloatware, turning ON everything like ports and turning OFF power management crap that will make your computer go to "sleep", etc. Those factory installs are murder for audio programs. The system hardware may be fine but the OS is likely telling it to do all sorts of stupid crap that is disrupting your audio stream thus causing your audio issues.

PPS: I am not a computer tech. I just know what I read and what has solved my own issues.

Occasionally I will get motorboating on my audio interface, usually occurs when I add some CPU intensive look ahead plugin to an already taxed project. I just reboot, restart the project, then it allows me to add that extra plugin.

. . . but I have never had motorboating occur from merely opening a project as you describe.
I think it's caused by a plugin (or too many) that your audio interface can't handle, or a buffer setting too low, but for me it usually happens when hitting the play button, sending the audio into an overload. Scares the hell out of my cat. Sometimes I ask too much from my 15 year old soundcard. What audio interface do you have ?

That's the problem.  Increase the buffers on your audio interface.  If you are mixing and not recording, low latency is not necessary.

This points to a list of FireWire chipsets recommended by Focusrite:

Note currently some VIA chipsets and Saffire are not compatible with Win10, the situation is likely to be temporary.

If you are running mix control 3.x and above you should not be using legacy FireWire drivers.

Latest version of mix control is 3.6.

I just got this yesterday messing around with WDM drivers on an old GNX3000. When searching for the lowest buffer possible, the motorboat kicks in first, then progresses to flat-out distortion.

First time I have seen this, but occurred right on the good/bad buffer threshold.
