My observation is that Radeon HD series seem solid and nVidia are hit and miss.

That flip flops every 3 months.

Any nVidia or ATi around or under $50 will be fine. They usually don't have fans on them and have less power consumption.

Also, check graphics card compatibility with your CPU.  I'm not 100% on this, but I read somewhere that if you have a Intel CPU that they work best with Nvidia graphics cards, and AMD work best with Radeon cards.  You will also need to ensure your power supply unit can cope with the graphics card you choose.

As I said, I'm no expert but these things are worth checking out.

Pretty odd my DAW is running an AsRock Z97 board that will only use ATi Crossfire.  I don't think CPUs have as much to do with graphic cards compared to motherboards and chip sets.

The other possible thing to consider is your monitor size and resolution. If you're ever going to want a large monitor capable of 4K resolutions, then you will need to research whether the graphic card is capable of running it.
