  • When will Sonar Pt support for Windows 7 end?

In a recent post it was stated that "Noel hinted recently that Sonar support for Win 7 will cease at some point in the not too distant future". [1]  While it is unlikely that CW will be able to quote an exact date, it would be great to have some assurance that Sonar support for Win 7 would be maintained until at least early 2016, giving MS and CW time to sort out Win 10, third party providers to update their software & drivers, and for us to find out what the final MS upgrade and financial models are for Win 10.

Noel, over to you ....

Thanks, R

I would imagine there's a difference between "not supported for Windows 7" and "doesn't work with Windows 7." I think there are people out there still using SONAR with Vista. Even though it's technically not supported, it still works.

Here is the original quote by Noel. What I wonder about is if you purchased a year membership for a product that supported Windows 7, how can that Windows 7 support be dropped before your year is up that you purchased ? That wouldn't seem right to me, but . . . Will there be a warning when Windows 7 support is going to be dropped, because that may be a deciding factor in some minds as to whether to buy in or continue with membership renewal, and as said, if you purchase your 12 month membership for a product that supports Windows 7, shouldn't that be for the full 12 months ? I realize Sonar will likely continue to work as expected for an undefined time after 'Official' support is drooped, but 'Officially' dropping support may potentially open unwanted avenues

As for support, if a product doesn't support a certain OS, doesn't that leave the door open for the vendor to be able to just say "Windows 7 is not a supported OS, therefore we can't help you" should you have issues ? Yet when you purchased your 12 month membership, Windows 7 WAS officially supported. It's not whether or not Cakewalk would do that, it's more the possibility.

Thanks Jeff for providing your thoughts, as well as links to the original posts.  Of course Craig is correct in his statement about the possibility of Sonar still working into future with Win 7.  However, my question was really more "deterministic" in nature rather than "probabilistic".  That is, how long will CW support the use of Windows 7 with their updates. By support I mean that they will endeavour to ensure Sonar Pt works with Win 7 and fix any known problems.

Yes that would be my concern as well, once official support is dropped, basically I think they wouldn't have to ensure that Sonar worked with Windows 7, and I would find it hard to accept that in the middle of a cycle where you paid for something that did have, and/or would have Windows 7 support, of course I understand it would be a hard thing to do with everyones membership anniversary being different etc, and of course there will be ways to negate the assumed rights of someone who purchased a product, albeit a 'membership' with certain support options implied, only to have those removed mid flight as it were, but I guess that's how it is. And there is probably things we don't understand, or didn't hink about, but that wouldn't change the fact that certain possible scenarios just don't seem right to me, anyway, that's life, it's only money.

It seems logical that Cakewalk would support Win 7 as long as Microsoft does, and not a minute longer.

When cake wanted to support touch the had to use a VC library that Microsoft's VCRedist installer for that rev would not all on XP out of a need to kill off XP. So users of XP can go no further than X2 and not x2A or beyond. I imagine Win7 will be supported until MS forces the hands of devs like that again.

And that's fair enough to. But as for selling/paying for something, a 12 month membership for a product officially supporting something, I think it would also be fair enough to expect that product to officially support said something for that 12 months, but maybe that's just me.

Of course Cakewalk will support Windows 7 for the next year..

Cart before horse. Not even really Cakewalks decision. When MS stop supporting C++ or other libraries is the thing that will probably what will force their hand. That not going to happen very soon.

I very much doubt this will happen for at least a couple of years maybe more.

Those who want reassurances now should plan to install Windows 10 within the next 11 months. The ball is very much in their court.
