  • What are you using on vocal Pops?

I am mixing a live show recording of a vocalist and acoustic guitar.  The recording has a fair number of vocal pops and I would like to remove as many as possible.  I know I can draw a quick envelope to remove them but that is tedious.  What are you technics or go-to effects to address this issue?

Thanks

Joe

Type vox into the browser and you will turn up Craig's cool tool to solve the pops. I usually split the clip around the pop and drag Craig's vox tools onto the clip. Fade clip boundaries around 10 or something really short.

There is some three letter thing in the tool that is on by default. I don't know what that does. Craig? I always turn it off.

You asked what I do and that is to open the track using "tool" into Wave Lab.

Pops are usually visable so you can quickly run throught the track and look for them.
With most wave editors it's fast repeditive action to either lower the gain for the peak or apply a hi pass EQ which will ussually diminish the pop to a reasonable level.
Right now for me it's easier to do this in a wave editor as I find Sonar's editing requires more moves to accomplish this. Fine if it's only a few, but 2 hours of audio with these issues can become tiresome if your having to make more than one or 2 mouse clicks to repeat a task.

I look forward to Sonar's forthcoming Wave editor.

I place the mike below the mouth and infront of the neck, it provides a very rich sound and no pops...I know that doesn't help you now or maybe ever bu5t it may help some.. :)  -S

Cactus Music, To your point about seeing the pops:

- I have seen videos on this and it looks easy
- However, either looking at the raw wave or the Melodyne blob, I always THINK I see the pop, but I have seldom been able to trim it out successfully.

I will try Shawn's method.  Of course, avoiding them to begin with is ideal, but with some singers, it is just really hard to avoid on certain words.  And I hate to get the singer so stressed about not popping, that the performance goes downhill.  (By the way, I have never had a pop screen that did a very good job.  Helps a little, but doesn't keep out the pops.)

ADT - Automatic Double Tracking. Gives a doubled voice effect.

As to removing pops at the source, I have a Pauly pop filter. It's REALLY pricey, but it works much, much better than any other pop filter I've tried.

If someone told me RX4 had a setting to wash your dishes and clean your laundry, I would probably believe them
