Sorry about that, I was in the CMS flowing text around an image and grabbed that URL by mistake. Here's the public-facing link. I do think it's a very interesting article.

HC has a commentary called "Beyond 11" and normally I write it, but I liked what Chris wrote so much I subbed it for mine, which was inferior anyway. Besides, we needed something a little more serious after my one from last week: "The Future of Music Streaming - Poodles, Bartenders, and Vladimir Putin."

Back to SONAR. It just seemed that a thread where the OP comes in, rants, and leaves should have something of interest for the idly curious.

It was a good article with some good observations of the music gear industry. How about an article that describes the amount of debt these big box music retailers carry to keep us supplied with disposable gear?

Well that story has received plenty of coverage, so that makes us less interested in doing yet another article on the subject. This article from Forbes is a good example. Also Eric Garland's articles have received wide circulation, and here's another one.

However, don't write off Guitar Center yet. Bond holders, who tend to know things before we do, are voting with their dollars and are showing more confidence in GC. All the rounds of firings may have made enough of a difference in the bottom line to ease some of the financial pressure. The story isn't over...

I do, however, think the disposable gear issue deserves further discussion. I've written about this quite a bit, and probably will continue doing so since it doesn't really seem to be on too many peoples' radar.

Sounds like to me someone has been in the "cracked" use territory hence the lack of contacting tech support for those manufacturers..I run all the same software and the companies have been very good at troubleshooting issues for me when they pop up.

Disagree. When you are dealing with a monthly customer you might get an entirely different profile. It's not as important to them as the people who own the product and paid 12 months up front.... That's not to dis.. other people on the monthly either.

Really? I would think anyone who paid for using the program would want to have it working properly, and therefore contact tech support.

I actually hadn't considered the crack angle but that would explain why some people simply refuse to contact tech support, assuming there isn't some other limitation like long-distance phone bills calling from Ulan Bator.

Basically to some people it's throw away. You pay your rent and move on. You don't own the product why should you bother to continue. In a way it's an extended trial. Not my mentality but that's what society is coming to nowadays...

Cheers..

To add, authentication via user account and polling (ie CCC) is extremely difficult to crack as authentication is done at server end rather than an permanent encryption key stored client side, unless the Cakewalk implementation is flimsy. We have seen examples of people going into demo mode against their wishes in these forums I am assuming there is an element of security here. This seems quite normal behaviour for a new implementation to me. On the other hand security is never impenetrable and Cakewalk I'm sure will be improving their security as times goes by.

Ah. You want to argue a point based on what you speculate other people may or may not be thinking.

I think I can boil that down to "you want to argue", without losing much of substance.
