Organized, I'm not.  I am driving myself crazy with files all over the place.  I go to find something and in frustration I am looking all over the place.  Some project files are on C, some on D, some E.  I decided it is time to get it all together.
 
Is there any suggestion on how to best set up the directories.  I don't think I want project files to default on the system drive of C so I had set up the default to go to E:\Cakewalk Projects.  This is the same place I am storing audio data.  But, I had the audio files going to E:\Audio\ then into separate folders sometimes, and sometimes into sub folders.  It is all confusing because sometimes I would put the project file into the audio data folder thinking it is best to have it all together.  Consequently, I have project files all over the place.  If the file isn't in the recent pull down then I am usually on the search.
 
I assume it is ok to have the project file on the same drive?  Any suggestions are most welcome.

My file system is G:/Cakewalk Project and in that I put the song-name project.  I save the audio within the song-name project folder.  Thus if the song is titled Tears my folder structure is G:/Cakewalk Project/Tears/Audio.  The Tears project files (cwp extentions) all go into the G:/Cakewalk Project/Tears folder and the audio goes into the G:/Cakewalk Project/Tears/Audio folder. This way  everything is all together and easier to back up.
 
Each song gets its own folder and within it its own audio folder.

I have a dedicated drive for work files (actually a RAID 0 array of two M.2 SSD's). In the root directory I have about a half dozen folders named after various users in my family, plus an Others folder as a catch-all. Within each of the "owner" folders is another bunch of folders named after categories of projects: Finished Songs, Unfinished Songs & Snippets, Working, etc.
 
Below that... What MarioD said. One folder per project; within that folder is the project .cwp file, auto-saves, asset files, etc. plus the Audio Files folder for that project.

I save all my Sonar projects into one directory on a drive I have dedicated for documents and the like. Each project is inside a folder that contains the project file and the audio folder. I recommend you always store audio with the project (so that a folder containing the project is self-contained), and that you put all these folders in the same place.

Hey thanks all for your input.  I think I got it now.  In my case then, I will put everything under E:\Cakewalk Projects\(name of song folder) and below that would be the audio folder for each project.  Therefore each of the CWP files would be in the (name of the song folder) and not all grouped together under E:\Cakewalk Projects\*.cwp  I guess I will try to move everything to one directory without screwing everything up.  I have a lot of songs on here.
 
As far as all of the other options under File Folder option, in the preferences, I assume I should leave them under the default of C etc.  What do you guys do?

Another stupid question on my part.  Do you save the final mix of each song in one master directory or do you also save them in the same folder as the named project file folder?

The safest way to reorganize into per-project folders with an audio folder under the folder containing the cwp is by opening every project and performing a "Save As" to a new folder in "E:\Cakewalk Projects" making sure the "Copy All Audio with Project" is enabled in the "Save As" dialog. This will copy all the audio referenced in the project to the new audio folder. Once everything is reorganized and verified, the old audio and projects can be deleted.

Scook, thanks for that info.  That sounds great!  I will do that and hopefully get everything together for once.  I will do one project at a time, and then verify and delete the old ones.
 
Do you have all of the other folder defaults set to C system drive i.e. templates etc.

I keep very little on the system drive other than the application, plug-in binaries and presets. I use a combination of registry edits, preference changes and directory junctions to achieve a solution which keeps all my custom stuff in a single directory tree. The most important configuration change is what you are tackling now, moving and consolidating your projects.

Organizing the rest of Sonar's files has always been a royal PITA because Cakewalk doesn't always make it clear which data is static, which changes, which is static but gets copied to be changed, which is per-program, which is per-user, etc. And those decisions seem pretty arbitrary - for example, Cakewalk dumps a load of copied drum maps into my user/appdata directory which I will never use (alongside the 1 or 2 that I do), but the project and track templates folders (which have far more documents that are personal to me and edited by me) are over in Cakewalk Content, which is mostly for static data. I don't know how much of this is due to my upgrade settings and how much are just inertia on their part, but it's very disorganised.
 
The most important thing is that you go into the Sonar preferences, check the myriad of folders listed there, and make sure everything that you care about is in a directory that is getting backed up.
