I recently upgraded from SONAR 8.5 to SONAR X3 Studio. Is there any way to set up Hot Keys to select note values similar to the way it behaved in 8.5?

It is so tedious to have to right click and navigate through a menu to find a different note value when I'm used to just hitting the numeral 8 and having an eighth note.

Sonar X3 has a set of pre-defined shortcuts for note duration that use the format CTRL + SHIFT + number.  The list can be found on page 507 of the Sonar X3 Reference Guide and can also be found in the "Tools shortcuts" section of the Help>Keyboard Shortcuts menu.

Thanks. I use the Staff view a lot and the shortcuts in SHS 6XL. I have X3a now and was decrying their absence in the new program.
Still, hitting one key is better than having to hit 3 keys to do the same thing.

The note duration functions may be mapped to single keys. The functions are in the Global Bindings section in Preferences > Customization > Keyboard Shortcuts. To find them search for "duration". Then map as needed. "Keyboard Shortcuts" is an advanced setting made visible by select the "Advanced" radio button at the bottom of the Preferences dialog.

Thanks for that, too, scook.

Thanks for the replies. I figured out how to change the global hot keys to do most of the basic choices I used to make in SONAR 8.5 like hitting "1" for a whole note duration and so forth. My brain will eventually adapt, I hope.

I could not figure out how to add a dot to any existing choice simply by hitting "." however. For those, I set the hot key to the one beside the basic value: "`" for a dotted whole, "3" for a dotted half, "5" for a dotted quarter, "7" for a dotted sixteenth, and "9" for a dotted eighth.

Then for triplets, I did Ctrl-1, etc. for each basic note value.

I really don't understand what goes through the mind of a software company when they make arbitrary changes to standards that have existed for many generations of the software. If it's better, I get it, but what used to take one key press or click of the mouse now takes more. It was simple before. Now it's less simple. So why did they do it?

I am thankful, though, that they did give us the option of reassigning keys so I can at least make it close to the way I'm used to working.

you can create hotkeys:

W = whole note
H =  half note
Q =  quarter note
E = eighth note
S =  sixteenth note
T =  thirty-second note

Ctrl-W =  triplet whole note
CTRL-H = triplet half note
etc.etc.

SHIFT-H = dotted half note
SHIFT-Q = dotted quarter note
etc.etc.
