  • Glouchester and sticking with Windows 7 until 2020 OK?

After reading the negative review of W10 on Amazon (link below), among other articles, I think I will just stay with W7 until 2020.  Everything works now like it should, and I like that.  When I moved from XP to W7 years ago, I still run into an issue now and then where something that used to work don't work anymore.  Bummer.  So I am thinking I just don't need the hassle.  I have built all my machines over the years, and at some point I will replace the motherboard, cpu, memory etc. and then my "free" W10 upgrade will be void because it won't be the same machine, and I'll have to buy W10, so not really "free".  This machine is dedicated to music production, and it and I could care less about a new start menu, new browser, fingerprint password (oh oh I got a blister, now I can't do music!).  The adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems applicable.  It seems qhite unlikely that the operating system is going to make me a better singer or a better guitar player.

So ... the reason for this diatribe/post ... am I safe to run the command center and upgrade my Platinum?  Sonar is not going to suddenly upgrade itself, and then stop working because I'm sticking with W7?  That would suck!!!

No. Sonar is still compatible with Win 7, 8 & now 10.

Most users here who have upgraded to win 10 have not experienced any negative issues. I've just updated to Win 10 without any issues.

good luck to you. I updated to 10 from 8.1 and am very happy. They have been saying in will be last version so I wonder if this means we will not need to worry about gear becoming obsolete thru driver neglect.

Those on Windows 10: do you know if RME drivers work ok?  And for that matter, did you have to find and install many other new drivers for printers, etc.?  Or do 'old' drivers work ok?
I'm just trying to gauge the size of the challenge involved in moving to W10; investing time in upgrading is ok, but spending further hours on searching for new drivers is another and I'll need to choose my moment with a bit more planning!

RME claims it's all good (I also worried about it). Not running 10 yet, but if RME says it is so, it's kinda like Mutt Lange saying you will have a hit when he's done :O)

That Amazon review is full of misinformation and is clearly uninformed. I wouldn't draw any conclusions by reading one negative review. Most of the complaints he had were about privacy and every single issue can be resolved by customizing Windows.

RME drivers work fine on Win10 - they released a driver update earlier last month. I installed it after Win 10 and there were no problems. I did have to reboot after install for totalmix to show up on the taskbar.

There will be a limit for how long we officially support Win 7. We will soon stop testing on it though it will likely remain compatible for a long time. Win10 is ahead of Win 7 in terms of performance and memory management and outperforms Win7. Read my blog post if you need more details.

Noel, I read your blog post on Win 10 and it was very reassuring. I was somewhat skeptical and unsure about the upgrade, but that was put to rest. Thanks, that was much appreciated.

Here's the final word from that blog:

CONCLUSION

Windows 10 is a mature version of Windows that might just be the best OS release from Microsoft, building on the performance of Windows 8.1 while addressing many of its limitations. It’s great to see features in there that benefit both audio professionals and consumers. The overall user experience is smoother and initial benchmarks show that it performs equally or better than Windows 8. The new continuous integration model, Microsoft’s renewed attention to the audio industry and the fact that it’s a free update from Windows 7 and 8, should make this a great update for most DAW users.

I clicked on the link, and I saw a page full of positive reviews, and one massive paragraph-break-free ranting screed. I didn't think "now, of all the people here, this is the guy whose opinion I trust".

Some people get really weird about this stuff. I don't know why.

I think it's fair to recognize that Windows 10 is "free" the same way that many games are "free to play". Microsoft most definitely strip mines all user activity and has chosen default settings that are extremely permissive. For me, I've concluded that Windows 10 essentially has been "google'ized" and that as a user it's important to understand/recognize that Microsoft makes their money by data-mining user activity and (likely) using that across their properties.

If I were you just stick with Win7 for six months then update.
You should update but I would not touch it with a barge poll for at least six months unless you enjoy waiting for drivers, and working around regression bugs. So make it 2016 not 2020.
