  • Anyone use Mirillis Action for screen recording Sonar? Will I be able to use ASIO?

I'm on the verge of making a few necessary purchases. One of which is screen capture software that I've needed for a loooon time. I've recently discovered a highly rated program for recording video games (as well as regular desktop vids... so recording stuff like Sonar which is what I'd be using it for).

So I'm wondering...

a) if anyone is using Mirillis to record Sonar could they maybe give an opinion on it? If it can record newfangled video games in high quality I figure it should do pretty well with Sonar... but of course IDK.

b) I've tried to wrap my head around this before but could never figure it all out. Will I be able to use ASIO mode in Sonar for playback, recording, etc while still being able to record a voice over into the video program or will I be forced to use one of the other driver modes? Maybe there is some kind of workaround? Just want to start trying to understand this type of stuff before I actually have the software so I'm not stuck in front of the computer with a thumb up my butt yelling at clouds.

And yeah... I'd really rather have Camtasia but Mirillis is like $40 and Camtasia is $300.

Thanks. Hope eveyone is have a good day.

Cheers.

PS: I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum BUT there is a very heavy Sonar component here as in I need to know if it is going to work with Sonar AND this will lead to (hopefully) some nice beginner tuts and tours of Sonar if I can figure it out.

Get a program called Voicemeeter (Donationware) and you'll be able to use ASIO with Sonar.

It's a multi virtual audio cable program that allows you to create and route virtual streams of audio.

I use Screenhunter Pro and AutoScreen Recorder pro from Wisdom Soft for screen capture and recording.

Cool. I saw another thread (similar to this) where Voicemeeter was mentioned so I went to check it out. Still wasn't sure whether I could keep Sonar in ASIO mode after watching a few demonstrations so this is good news.

I am resistant to doing too much dorking around but the alternatives would be even more dorking around (like I was literally thinking maybe I would record my voice into a completely different computer and try to sync it all up later... unpleasant).

Thanks.

You updated while I was typing. I'll look into those other programs as well. Mirillis is looking good and simple to use though and the price is right.

Was gonna try Camstudio but too much freaking out about nefarious installers. Can't be arsed/take the risk even if it is free.

Cheers.

+1 on VoiceMeeter, needed to record ASIO.

If you are on Windows 10 it includes a built-in screen recorder that has good quality sound and a high frame rate. It seems as good as anything I've tried. You open it by hitting Win+G. When asked, lie and say Sonar is a game :-)

I've tried the following:
  • Snagit - Mono only
  • BB Flashback - Free, meh
  • CamStudio - Free, latest version appears to have malware, deleted from system
  • MS Expression - Free, works great, but a bit of a pain since you have to do a second step to encode the video
  • Corel Screen Recorder - Works great, 30 fps limit (enough for Sonar), incl. with Corel VideoStudio
  • LiteCAM HD - Works well, 30 fps limit. Free and paid versions. They also have liteCAM Game which has a 100 fps limit. Haven't tried liteCAM game.
  • Win 10 Game Recorder - Free, works great, high fps
With all the experimenting I did, I somehow missed Mirillis!

I'll use the Win 10 tool soon on a video. We'll see if I still like it as much after using it on a real project.

Awesome. I was checking out some info this morning on it and if the free/licensed version strips out the watermark (and it isn't crammed with bullpuckey spyware/malware/adware which I have not seen any reports of) that's great.

It does not seem to be quite up to the level of Mirillis but it will do the trick for now and of course that extra $40 can go toward other stuff. It will also give me a chance to test out Voicemeeter with various audio programs on my laptop.

I will likely still get Mirillis at some point because it does seem to produce some better results but I'm just starting out anyway. I don't think anyone is going to expect Hollywood level production values out of me at first (but I can at least go for Bollywood quality... lulz).

Also been poking about at some of the video editors. Looks like there are some pretty good freeware/donationware ones. I am kind of upset that Adobe Premiere 2 is no longer being offered as a free download. I figured it would be there ready and waiting but Adobe apparently yanked it and I stupidly did not download it when I had the chance. I had a copy on disc somewhere but gawd knows where that went.. and really it ooold anyway.

Thanks doods.

Great info. There's another one that seems to be rather popular. AktivePresenter (or something like that). Haven't researched it much but it's another free one.

I was going to go the Jing/Snagit route but yeah... limitations there. Nice entry to the Camtasia universe I guess but I've gotta settle in on a cheap free one and get on with it. I would probably spend way too much time testing all these programs instead of using one (or two) recording things I'm doing in Sonar.

Gonna have to get another hardrive for storage too but I've needed to do that for a while anyway.

Cheers, all.

PS: I actually want to make a little animated text graphic/logo/intro for my stuff that kind of starts out centered/jumping out at the viewer then it scurries off into a corner as a watermark. I see a lot of the editing software can do this stuff but not sure to what extent. Might be tricky.

Just a ramble that might garner some thoughts.

There are a number of online intro video creators that can make intros for cheap. Search on video intro creator. Dump the music and add your own of course !

PS: I tried the Mirillis Action trial and was impressed, but a sale at the time took me the LiteCam Game 100fps route.

A plus with Mirillis and LiteCam is that they can offload processing to the graphics card - therefore less CPU impact.

HyperCam uses OpenCandy (at least on free) which puts them in my bad books. It 'offers' you crapware at install time and may catch out less diligent clickers.

I used to use the free Microsoft Expression Encoder/Screen Capture which was great if a little long-winded to convert formats (through say Handbrake).

I also picked up AShampoo Snap 8 cheaply recently. It's origins were static Screen Capture, more akin to SnagIt, but now incorporates video and OCR to capture non-selectable text ... and edit with layers etc. I'm yet to thoroughly put it's video through it's paces but certainly addresses static capture which LiteCam Game omits (LiteCam HD addresses). I got it for  $11.99 at their registered user / mailing list discounts by virtue of previously having their free Burning Suite installed.
