Thanks to everyone here for all of the good advice on how to proceed with the clean install of Win 10 and some of the changes to sharing.

It is rare indeed to have a poster with an ulterior motive on these forums set to the dark side.

One "optimization" you might want to disable is this one.
By default Windows shares your windows update downloads over the internet (like bittorrent). For a DAW you probably want to turn off this behavior to prevent unwanted background internet activity. I've set mine to only share it on my local network, not the internet.

Oh and if you want to stop Windows update :
start a CMD app (Windows key + X - Command Prompt ADMIN) then type - net  stop wuauserv  to restart same command except replace stop with start

I'm till testing out windows 10 on my old Daw computer. Its a core 2 quad extreme with 8 gig of ram and my old hard drive in it.

Windows 10 installed fine I had to update the driver for the old video card.

Then I installed my old delta 66 and installed the newest drivers using compatibility mode and tested all is working great. I even installed my motu fastlane usb midi using compatibility and it tested fine as well.

I loaded up an audio only project on X2 (because I have not updated the old computer) and it was able to play without clicks etc at the 128 buffer setting.

By the way, you don't need to have the windows key to activate it. After doing the update process from a previous version, you can do a clean install as mentioned earlier. When the screen comes that asks you for the product key just hit skip for now. Windows will activate itself after finishing the installation based on the update version you did earlier.

Have fun

I don't think this has been mentionned, but I found to my surprise, at some point during the upgrade from W7, W10 had activated on-board sound (in the BIOS) and installed Realtek drivers.

Had to disable then un-install.

Other than that, succesful upgrade.

ANd it cured my horrendous latency problem. So thanks MS !

Cheers,
Jerry
Edited to thank MS !
