  • Can Cakewalk midi samples be corrected?

Hi folks,
I'm not very experienced with samples, but I suspect that one of the midi samples that forms the "Aggressive Bass" sound included with Cakewalk SI Bass, is possibly not 'cut' correctly. It appears to lag in relation to the beat. I became quite frustrated trying to get the bass to match the midi drums I was using, but narrowed it down to only one particular note (D4). Bouncing to clip seemed to confirm that it had a slightly different starting point than the other notes. To make sure I've done experiments with simple beats (eg repeating 1/8 @ 120bpm), quantized and bounced to track with similar results. Is this a glitch? ... Is there any way to correct the actual sample? I particularly like the sound of this bass and use it often.

I would think you could edit the particular wave file/files that need fixing, and then replace the original file or files with your edited ones.  You would want to back up the original ones, just in case your perception of 'lag' may have been tempered by a good stout round of ale, hee hee.  (It's always good to create a way to restore the original content, in case there is some other factors to consider, or whatever.

So lots of audio wave editors out there, so it shouldn't be much of a deal to accomplish some minor editing to fix something like you are seeing for some factory provided sample content.

Good luck with it all,

Hi Robert,
a good stout round of ale might be the best thing ... but probably not the cause of this one! (or should I say this particular one!!). Your backup suggestion is duly noted.
Any ideas on what file names to look for - or where to look for Cakewalk instruments?
I can't find anything under Programme files. I did find the SI Bass Guitar in the VST folder - but only a ".dll". I can't imagine that containing all the samples? or would it?

Yes, I can confirm that this samples are cut inaccurately. Presets are ".prog" files, they refer to ".sfz", and they refer to ".wav" files. If you open prog and sfz files in text editor you can read them.

Hey Anton,
thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction! I've found the original sample and worked out how to alter it.
I now have to work out how many of the samples I mess around with as quite a few look like they are cut poorly.

Best of luck - keep the ale handy, for emergency medicinal purposes only, of course.  :)

If that many presets have crappy samples, I would suggest either upping the ale until you cannot hear the mistakes any more, or maybe look for a new sample library from some better company.

To avoid this:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State-dependent_memory  I recommend only composing when you're sober. :)
