  • Local help freezes on index search

On the last 2 versions of Platinum I've noticed that if I put a search term in the keyword box of the index tab, most of the time local help will freeze after just placing one letter(like V) in the box. When this happens, I see the little houglass sort of thing twirling around and it's stuck on that. If I try to close the help box using the upper right X, I get a windows error screen saying it must close Sonar PLT or wait to see if it comes around. I choose close, both help and Platinum close.

Most of the time I put a keyword in the Search tab's box and so far that one hasn't crashed. I upgraded to the most recent help dated June and it does the same thing. This is a brand new studiocat computer running Win 8.1 Pro. Never seen this in any version ever (since 1992). I tried going to SONAR.CHM without Platinum open and it doesn't crash.

Has this ever happened to anyone?

Is it the Help that's trying to get the answer from the internet, or the local help? Is your computer connected to the internet when you're searching?

It's connected, but I have checked "use local help" I find that far better. It seems the internet help when you use a search term you get all sorts of useless stuff to sift through. Maybe I'm not using it right.

Hey, Gerry.

I just tried this with S-Plat Gloucester.  It works like I would expect, no problems.  In Prefs>File>Advanced I have 'Always Use Local Help' checked - I have no idea if that matters in this case.

To get to Help, I always click the Help menu option then What's New and go from there.

If you don't have it checked then it always goes to internet help and never uses local help unless that's checked. I hit F1 always to go to help. Win 8 is new to me and this never happened with Win 7.

I'm still mostly using 32 bit Platinum, but soon will make the 64 bit transition.  I'm loaded up with Ivory piano and Superior Drummer in my template and with the limited amount of RAM 32 bit can access I wonder if that's the problem.

If Win 8 takes more memory than Win 7 and the searching part of Sonar help uses more memory, I wonder if that can cause a freeze, especially if Win 8 is doing some background crap I'm not aware of. I just tried it again after the computer has been on a long time and idle and 64 bit nor 32 bit crashes with local help, so it's clearly intermittent.

Nice to see you BobF, I assume you the same BobF I knew in Glennbo's Cakewalk coffeehouse. Have a great night.

I just experienced a little weirdness with the local help also.  It was the first time that I tried to use it since upgrading to Gloucester.  Local help has always worked fine for me.  What is was doing was.....well......nothing!  I would enter a search term on the search tab and tell it to display topics.....nothing... the help window stayed right at "what's new in Gloucester".  Tried to use the Index....same problem.  Weird.  I'll try it again tomorrow but I found it more than circumstantial that this happened the same time as Gerry's trouble....  We'll see what happens tomorrow......

Thanks for the post, Dave. The plot thickens on this problem. Both our experiences may indicate something unstable about the local help.

FWIW, I'm not seeing a problem searching the latest local help version 1.0.0.16.

My first post above I was on 1.0.0.15 Help with S-Plat Gloucester.  I just updated Help to 1.0.0.16 and Index/Search, everything is still working fine here.

Why can I see only 1.0.0.15 help both in CC and My Account?
