• SONAR
  • Best monitor resolution??

Hi,

Considering upgrading to two 27 monitors.

I see that the 2560X1440 resolution is quite a bit more expensive than the typical HD 1920x1080 resolution.

Would there be significant workflow benefits in Sonar for me save and go for the higher resolution (without straining my fading/aging eyesight)?

Thanks,
Jon

Highly doubtful that higher resolution will benefit. I run 27" at 1920x1080 and things are often small enough as it is (and my eyes are good). Two monitors is more benefit to me than trying to squeeze more on one.

I have been looking at the same issue.
I would suggest you keep the DPI at around 100 or less. Sonar does not run well on Windows PCs where the screen 'zoom' (font size) is adjusted larger than Windows default (search this forum), so you will be stuck at max rez unless you reduce the monitor's rez and then what is the point of paying for 2560x1440.
I got a laptop with a 17" 1920x1080 full HD screen. It is virtually unusable for me at this resolution for anything other than videos. I had to add plugins to my browser and email just to read the menus although the content is easily zoomable. I find about 150% zoom is comfortable. At the full rez, Sonar screen elements are so small it is difficult to manipulate with the touchpad and difficult to see.
In my studio I have 2 20" 1440x900 and 1 24" 1920x1080 monitors. I would be reluctant to go to any higher resolution. If you want the 2560x1440 rez, save your money for a larger screen size to keep the DPI <100.
I suggest you calculate the DPI of your current setup if it is comfortable and use that as a guide.

I agree with mettelus.....2 x 27" @ 1920x1080 would probably be the max rez I would go with . This should give slightly less than 100 DPI. These are fairly cheap. And BTW, multiple monitors works really well with Sonar. My next system will have 4 if I can swing it space wise.

My laptop is 15 inch and 1920x1080. Stuff is pretty small but usable at normal working distance. I also have terrible eyesight (but good glasses to compensate). I would totally put such large screens at 2560x1440. On my studio computer I have two aging 22 inch ones at 1680x1050 (not that big a diff with full HD) and I'm constantly running out of screen real estate for serious work.

Lots depends on your "eye" power... I use two 32in' 1080p monitors and they work great... I'm pretty ancient...and my eyes are far worse than my younger daughters...my old smaller monitors were a pain... she has no problem discerning things that I can't.

1920/1080 is totally fine... I'd spend the money and get bigger monitors... if you see yourself running complex/large mixes like orchestrations down the line, go with the largest you can so you don't waste money in the long run once you start thinking, "gee, a couple 32 in would sure show me a lot more of what I'm doing at a glance." Also, it's "eye-proof".

1920x1080 is not sufficient for me. I have 2 x 24" 1920x1200, and I'm going to upgrade to 2 x 30" 2560x1600. 2 x 27" 2560X1440 might be good or not, depending on whether it is suitable for you, that everything will be pretty small on monitors. I'd never take 2 x 27" 1920x1080, and prefer my 2 x 24" 1920x1200 over it.

Jon,
I've been thinking about dumping my 2x24 inch monitors for one of the 34 inch wide screens (21:9) like the LG 34U65 (2560x1080) or the 34U94 (3440x1340).  Does anyone have any experience with either of these?  Also, since there is a significant difference in price, is the higher resolution worth it?

The reasons are: (1) I would like wider view in the track pane and midi editing views (piano roll and drum pane),  (2)  I find I tend to only use one monitor most of the time and then open and close things as I need them (3) I haven't been able to make the Screensets work well with two monitors.

I found that docking doesn't work well with two monitors for me, so I use track view on first, and other views floated on second monitor usually. But if needed, I can stretch Track View or PRV on both monitors.
I think 3440x1440 might be good, if you don't bother higher PPI, same as 27" 2560x1440, as I understand. 2560x1080 is not enough for me.
