I would like some help with recording problems that I am having in SONAR Pro.  I inserted my softsynth and recorded what I played and then I inserted an audio track to record the midi track.  Now I can’t get the audio track to record the midi track, it worked fine until I just recently had to reinstall all of my software.  I’m not sure what I am doing wrong, any suggestions?

You as yet cannot record one track to another. You can bounce or freeze the synth which is the same thing more or less.

That update is coming to do so shortly though (record one track into another). Either this week or next month, Craig said "August."

Are you sure talking about a midi track or maybe an softsynth instrument track that combines midi and audio in one track?

What ever you were doing in X3 should work in the new SONAR.
 
Is is possible in X3 you were using simple instrument tracks and not MIDI tracks? A simple instrument track is a hybrid of a MIDI track and an audio track.
 
If you are now using a regular MIDI track, you will need to add at least one audio track with the input set to the synth. Once the audio track is setup, add the effects in the FX bin or ProChannel of the audio track. Once the routing is complete, you can freeze the synth or bounce it to another track if you want directly edit the audio created by the synth.

The way to render a MIDI/soft synth track into an audio  track with FX (or without) has always been Bounce To Track or Freeze. Nothing has changed. I wonder what your workflow actually has been. Maybe you have used internal (or SB) soundcards "Stereo Mix" or "What you Hear" settings? Anyway, bouncing or freezing is the way to do quickly and reliably.

I'm confused why bouncing or freezing is needed. I add audio effects to instrument tracks directly. I have midi tracks whose output is set to the instrument track and the correct channel. I only freeze or bounce if the project size requires it to free up resources. I guess if I wanted to export the stems into another project for mixing would be a reason.
