  • How about a mix/remix competition? (p.8)

Following from that, and more pertinent to the matter at hand -

Since this is a community thing, and not a commission, or even formal contest with a ranking, I think it would be interesting if we didn't define what we meant by "remix", and let everyone run with their own idea. I reckon we'd get all kinds of fascinating stuff out of that.

Hi John T. Like what you've said here. What do you think about millzy's post above with a song creation contest followed by remix. I sort of mentioned a similar thing in post #34.

My two cents is to keep it simple. Making a contest that is in two parts ads another layer that makes participation more complex. Just looking at some of the responses, it is clear that some have a VERY different concept of what defines a remix.  To those who listen/dj/produce genres where remixes are common, remix typically means using parts of the original song to make another version.  Sometimes the remix is so different than original that it could easily be a new song in it's own right. Tempos, keys and just about anything else can change.  Elements can be added or subtracted. Songs can even turn to radically different genres. To a person who works mostly in classic rock, blues, classical, etc, "remix" may mean something more along the lines of an alternative variation still very much like the original.   I'm assuming the OP was suggesting closer in spirit to the former definition i gave than the latter.  If that is the case, then provide stems to song, deadline and simple, non-constricting rules. I think requesting only Sonar plugs is reasonable.

I am the OP. The reason I thought for the song then a remix was that we need to get material for remixing from somewhere. So why not do a contest collaboration first to acquire material then a remix

Anyway keep the ideas coming because it's not my remix it's everyone's.

BTW. I use the term remix as there doesn't seem to be another that gives people an idea without a lengthy description.

I suppose it could just be called "Mix Competition," as opposed to "Remix?"

Then it may be thought of as just a "Mix" and no altering of the song is allowed. Which is not the case.

I think it's an interesting idea and I would be on board for having a go at a remix.
Personally I would prefer a song that already had a finished mix and could give me something I could compare my own effort to, as well as hear what others have done to finished tracks.
I would have no problems with altering the format of the song, and any or all alterations would be acceptable if this was agreed upon. I think the judging could take into account whether alterations to lyrics, rhythm, melody, etc. would contribute to a better mix.
If recording the tracks was part of the "competition", then I think this would add an extra layer of complexity and could be a separate competition if required.
Craig has already posted that he would be happy to provide the song for a remix, as I'm sure others would if needed.

The song could (as an example) have anything from just vocals or bass, or up to a full song. Then it would be up to the "mixers", which way the song takes. From old school, to new age, and everything in between
Liking the idea more and more

I'm stoked by the response so far and while we've had a range of suggestions I think for this first attempt simplicity seems to be a recurring theme so I'm in the process of acquiring some tracks and when I have that organised I'll update with some more info.

Please keep, posting though with ideas and your support as if we can make a success of this then we can get into more complex structures for future song construction contests etc.

Thanks guys for all the feedback.
I waited for 3 weeks on a few people to get back to me about some matters and they haven't so I'm sort of hung up in limbo without a stick to walk under.

I'm not going to spend any more time on this. If anyone else wants to take up the baton by all means. I have nothing to pass on except the idea so its all yours.
