  • Sonar X3 Studio - Interferes with wireless mouse

Using Sonar x3 Studio (with X3e patch) on new Win 7 64bit desktop. I have used X3 on a previous Win 7 PC and just installed it on this new, much more powerful, PC. As soon as I got it running (X3 is running fine) I noticed that my wireless mouse freezes up, sometimes for several seconds. When frozen, click and right-click also do not work. Other times the cursor is just jumpy. And this issue continues even after terminating X3.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to look for. Suggestions? I have quite a bit of Windows experience so I can investigate things that are suggested.

Thanks,
Larry

I'm mainly using soft synths but I do have two hardware synths attached through a MidiMan Midisport 4x4 midi interface.

Do you have any external gear that could interfere with the receiver? With a new PC, bloatware is something to also check, but silly things like dirt on the optical lense, battery level, distance from the receiver and USB conflicts can cause such. It seems like a loss of signal situation, so distance/interference would be a first guess.

I suppose the midi interface could be a suspect since I installed it just before installing X3. It is connected to a USB port on the back of the PC and the mouse receiver is in a USB port on the top of the PC. I don't know if they share a hub or whatever. I could try unplugging the midi interface.

Hmmmm......    I've had the midi interface unplugged for 30 minutes or so and I have been playing some stuff via X3.  No problems with the mouse.  If this keeps up I'll have to blame the midi interface.  Then I will try plugging the mouse interface into a different USB port and then the midi interface into a different USB port and then....????

One thing you might consider doing is buying a USB PCI card and run all your audio/midi stuff through it.

I simply do not see how Sonar itself could interfere with a mouse. Communication with your mouse is entirely within Windows. The fact that the problem continues after you exit Sonar confirms that impression. I think the use of Sonar as the application is most probably a coincidence. The first thing I would try is a wired mouse. You can get one for 10 bucks if you do not have a drawerful. If that works, you can stop there unless you need wireless for some reason. If it does not work, then you can rule out a host of problems related to radio communication issues, and hone in on why your USB mouse is not working properly in that socket. For that, the first test is to just change the socket.

You should not need to change ports, but one thing to check would be Windows power profiles to make sure USB ports, etc. are not allowed to go idle. Windows is not elegant about hibernating, sleeping, on-the-fly power management; is best to have everything online 24/7 when in DAW mode.

Unplugging the midi interface seems to have cured the problem.  All work fine even with Sonar running and playing projects.  I'll try plugging it back in to see if the problem starts up again.

I would definitely go the route of checking the power management of my USB ports.

I have a all my MIDI stuff and iLok connected to an external powered USB hub and my wireless mouse receiver on a different USB socket. Never any problems.

OK, what should I check for?  The device manager lists a ton of USB related items.  I've checked the power management on the ones that say Generic USB Hub and USB Root Hub.  They all say it's OK for the PC to turn the device off to save power.
