Windows 8... Harddrive diagnostics failed last night.. reinstalled OS, installed all plugins and Sonar.. now getting the above message when I try to open the most recent project I was working on. How can I get this project back? My last task on that project was to mix and master :-(

I would think if your hard drive diagnostics failed, reinstalling the operating system is just asking for further problems. Your problem is more likely hardware failure. You probably need to install a new hard drive.

If you saved projects to the hdd before it failed and have managed to reinstall the OS onto the same drive, provided you didn't format the drive during installation, any projects and files that are not corrupted due to bad sectors will still be on the drive in the lcation that you saved them. You should use explorer to copy them across to anther drive immediately. Any that you can't find or copy are sadly gone forever if you do not have a backup. A tough lesson that we have all learned at some stage.

You should also consider having a separate drive for your projects and audio files.

Hope you find your files!

Can you open the project in safe mode?

I finally opened the project in safe mode without any plugin and saved. Now, I have the whole project available to me without any plugin, so I have to add plugins back again which is another 2 hour job, but I am okay with that. (I do have other backup copies, if you guys want me to try out something different)
Good thing I have the habit of writing small journal in each track description section with the plugin setting details because I always feel that each track has its own story :-)
Thanks for your help.
This forum is amazing.. people like you guys, Craig and Scook keep me going.

If on the offchance you are running reflektor make sure you roll back to previous version first then try it. Again the windows event viewer may identify the problem plugin. Ta

What are the steps you would follow for "Windows Event Viewer" side of investigation?
