  • Run as administrator disables dragging wav file into Sonar

I'm very new to Win 8.1 Pro and I was very surprised today when I found out that if I open Platinum with Run as administrator, I can no longer drag files into Sonar like wav, mp3, etc. I rebooted the computer and the same thing happened so then I unchecked Run as administrator and Platinum worked fine, dragging files in. I've used Run as administrator with Win 7 with no problems like this.

Has anyone else had this problem or knows why this occurred?

It is the best reason I know of to stop using older plug-ins which require a host to run as administrator. It might be possible to figure out the all the registry hacks necessary for older plug-ins to run without the elevating host privileges. I know of no comprehensive source for the information.

Likely your problem has to do with the ownership of the files you are attempting to drag. You can check the owner of the file by right clicking the file icon/name then selecting properties then the security tab then the advanced button then owner. If you are working as userA because you log on to the userA account, and open Sonar, then Sonar has the ownership and access permissions of userA. Files that were written under a userA logon are typically owned by userA, and not accessible to other users unless they are granted access by userA. When you log on as userA, but then open Sonar by choosing "run as administrator," Sonar is no longer running with userA's ownership and permissions, but using a new account (security token) to run Sonar with different permissions. Although you retain the permission to copy a file to a folder as userA, when Sonar as administrator attempts to open a userA owned file it lacks the proper permissions.

By design. Stop running Sonar as Administrator and apply registry hacks to plugins that complain. You could also try setting up a new windows user account.

Or just disable UAC.

Not recommended unless your PC's security does not matter to you ! :)

I have a shortcut to the desktop in the Browser. Actually easier than dragging in from the desktop because you don't need to leave the SONAR environment or resize any windows.

So how do I apply registry hacks to plugins that complain? SO far no one has explained anything about this.

You may be spot on about this. I had lots of trouble getting Win 8 and Win 7 to cooperate on my network having problems with permission and access, so I did the "take ownership" thing for that HD on Win 7 that had the wav files. Back then I ended up solving the network problem in a different way. So "take ownership" didn't help at all and maybe I need to undo it.  If I recall I let Win 8 own those files, so should I change the ownership back to Win 7? So I won't have this issue with Run as administrator? Sonar is on the Win 8 computer.

Under Properties for one of the files, I see under Security / Group - 2 listings for Account Unknown and one of those account numbers match who is the owner of that file. So with my limited understanding of this, it appears that those Account Unknown names refer to my Win 8 machine or my 3rd XP computer on the Network.

I don't want a situation where I can't use Run as administrator when I need to, so let me know what your suggestions are.

I still think it's easiest just to add Desktop to the Media tab's drop-down menu. This also makes it easy to drag files to the desktop.
