Hi all...

My first time getting into Cakewalk Sound Center in force. I usually use TTS but thought I'd play with this. The problem for me is this:
Attempting to playback multiple instruments at once. (no prob in TTS) In my case I've recorded a string 'section' in Sound Center's CH 1....  Now onto another midi channel assigned to CH2 where I want a solo violin. Problem is that the original CH1 is playing the solo violin, instead of the string section I programmed. I want to use all 16 midi channels of Sound Center each with a different instrument just as I do in TTS, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get each channel to play it's individual content.

I'm sure it's simple. Can someone lead me down the path of enlightenment ?

Can't be done with CSC. Unlike TTS-1 an instance of CSC can only play one program at a time.

Hmmm ok Then I'm confused why it would have 16 channels?

Because, the midi specification means that it must respond to any one of the 16 legal midi channels being feed to it.  But as Scook mentioned, it will only play one instrument per instance.  The same is true of many other soft-synths, such as Dimension Pro and Rapture.

The TTS-1 is a multi-timbral synth and is probably GM/GS compliant with it's channel mappings.  Therefore, for example, channel 10 always maps to the percussion instruments.  There are also standardized program mappings, so when a GM or GS midi file calls for an acoustic piano, it will call up program number 1, or program number 12 for a vibraphone, etc.

Not all synths are multi-timbral, like TTS is.  Therefore, they are one patch/program per instance and do not comply with the GM, GS, or XG midi standards.

DPro and Rapture have a multi-timbral setting in their options. When enabled each element is hard coded to respond to the MIDI channel with the same number as the synth element. IOW MIDI channel 1 drives synth element 1, MIDI channel 2 drives synth element 2, etc. I believe in multi-timbral mode, the MIDI channels above 4 in the case of DPro and 6 in the case of Rapture are ignored. Unfortunately DPro and Rapture only have one stereo output

Thanks for the input. It would be nice then if I could find better options in TTS, rather than multiple instances of Sound...

If you were not using TTS-1 mutliple outputs, DPro can handle 4 inputs and Rapture can handle 6. At its heart CSC is a DPro and Rapture player but CSC does not have a multi-timbral setting.

Well, there you go - I learn something new every day around here   I guess I would say DPro and Rapture have limited multi-timbral functionality (compared to something like TTS-1, or other GM/GS/XG synths that allow you to map to 16 full instruments.)

Thanks for the info Mr. Cook.
