I've been putting off exploring the new color schemes/abilities but am now in a specific situation where I actually NEED to figure a very specific thing out to help with a specific task I am performing.
 
The scenario is when I select a clip it turns a nice bright shade of grey which allows me to see the waveform line clearly.
 
However if I drag that clip out beyond its original boundary (in this case I am creating splits, then drag cropping the clip beyond the split) the clip background switches back to the extremely dark (almost black) background. It is rather disorienting and makes it hard to quickly put the crops where I need them to be (because I am using the waveform line as a reference which is also kind of dark and the contrast is bad).
 
I just took a quick look at all the color options available and have no idea which one I need to change to avoid this issue. I don't care if the clip background color changes when the clip boundary is extended out. In fact I think I would prefer it. I just need a better contrast when it does so I can accurately set the crop point(s).
 
Any of you know which color preference options might help with this?

Beep, have you tried simply changing the foreground and/or background colour of your clip(s) via the Clip part of the track Inspector?

Hi, Jonesey. That will get embedded into the project data... will it not? This is actually someone elses work so I'd like to avoid that but that's a good suggestion if it works.
 
I really don't understand why they coded things so the color darkens when dragged after a certain point. I can see the use of having a slight change once you've exceeded originally boundaries of a selected clip but it's kind of strange for editing. I'm not even sure this is intentional behavior. As in it might even be a bug.
 
Perhaps a test procedure is in order.
 
1) Create an audio clip
 
2) Split the clip in two and drag the second clip further down the timeline (I don't think that last part is necessary but for the sake of ensuring a good test might as well include it)
 
3) Now select and slip edit the end of the first clip toward the end of the timeline
 
Does the clip turn from gray to black/original dark gray once you drag it out?
 
Anyway... I've noticed this before but it has become very apparent doing intense editing work. Just want to make sure I know (and everyone else knows) what I am dealing with.
 
Ideally I would like to fix this on a Color Preferences level so the changes don't follow the project to whomever I send it to.
 
Strange circumstance I know. Probably being weird as usual.

PS: It should maybe be noted this is on grouped clips across multiple tracks. Not just specific clip so fiddling with clip colors in the Inspector might be weird. Not sure.

I've just followed your steps and the answer is no - the extended part of the clip maintains the same colour as the rest of the clip

Thanks for checking. That is strange. Perhaps there is a step missing.
 
Maybe try moving the first clip slightly as well (so both clips have been moved in one direction or the other). That is something that I've been consistently doing so maybe that has something to do with it.
 
If not this may be system specific.
 
I am still on Dorchester if that makes any difference. Perhaps something has been fixed in recent updates.

Okay, just checked that out Jonesey. You have the same thing going on that I do. It's the flashing from light grey to the dark default clip color when cropping that's greifing me.
 
Since the clip is still selected I would like it to stay the selection color when cropping (light gray) so the contrast is better for hunting around for events and Zero Crossings. Alternatively I guess changing the default clip background color might work but I'm not sure.
 
I'm also not sure whether this can be done in the Edit > Preferences menu (or if it has to be set per track/clip which would eb no good). I am also hestitant to change the color scheme I'm accustomed to (default) simply to acheive the contrast when performing this specific task (it might also make identifying selected clips harder which would be a worse problem).
 
Anyway... shut down for the night but if you (or anyone else) have any thoughts on how to workaround this it would of course be appreciated and I thank you for taking the time to try it out.

If you do an edit as you mention above where this is some else's project a note in the note field of the track Inspector for that track documenting it is a good idea. 

I don't know why you like the bright shade of gray that appears when you select the clip. IMO that makes it harder to examine the waveforms (i.e. black and blue is a better contrast than gray and blue).
 
So, what I do is split the clip (by dragging the lower half of it), then click the Clips pane background once to deselect the clip, then start adjusting the split point.
