  • Can I bequeath my Cakewalk account to a legatee?

I can give all my logins and passwords to someone else but can I change the actual personal identity (name and address) associated with my current Cakewalk account to ensure that that account then becomes theirs?

It would cost more in legal fees than the account is worth.

The only thing of value in most Cakewalk accounts is access to licensed products. The licenses are granted to the owner of the product and are not transferable. Presumably that means that the license can not be conveyed to anyone else by sale, gift or bequest. Any services or benefits associated with the "ownership" of the products would likely be limited to the original licensee. So what would be the point of transferring the account, even if it could be done under the terms of service?

Still that info could all be changed except for your name but as you don't have to "prove" who you are your legatee could use your name until they have all the programs.

according to the EULA which you had to agree to in order to install the software, sonar is not transferrable to anyone else - it is licensed only to you; therefore you cannot Will the software to your kids legally.

as far as "carrying your muse" - I assume what you mean is that you want them to have access to your songs in sonar as recorded and mixed so that they can use them as they desire from the projects.  if that's the case, then you can simply have them purchase their own license and you can give them your projects which will open in their copy of sonar.

I suppose that the projects as loaded by a legatee under separate licence will not automatically include any separately licensed effects and instrument plugins, ProChannel strips, libraries etc. that the original incorporated... ?

As said the licences are none transferable, but all your files are yours and certainly can be distributed to anyone.
And of course if you leave them your DAW computer and the password to fire it up they can certainly carry on from where you left off and finish your works in progress.
There is nothing illegal that I see about sharing the software on the computer. It's not like I have to tell clients.. "Stay away from the DAW! If you touch that keyboard I'll go to jail!"
They would just not be able to access your account and updates. They would need a new licence for that.

correct, but I think all of the cakewalk instruments and plugins, etc are licensed the same or at least similarly.  third party VSTs and VSTi's however would be determined by THEIR EULA, not Sonars and you'd have to verify with each vendor what their policy is on transfer.  Several of the instrument and FX companies do allow transfer (like NI, IK, etc).
