It won't work if you use the Insert command. Instead, right-click on an FX bin and insert the synth "manually." Then create a MIDI track for it, and assign the out to Hypersonic.

I use Hypersonic with Sonar 7 but encounter the same problem you describe if I use the standard insert option.

this is gonna sound noobish but where exactly do i find the "FX bins"???

On an audio or synth track channel in the mixer there is a black square. Right-click on it, and you have the option to insert effects or instruments (VST and DX).

Have a look

thanks my man...let me try again

No that's correct Hypersonic is a soft synth and not an Audio effect. Personally I open up the Synth Rack to insert the soft synth there. Once you have inserted Hypersonic you can then assign all the track Properties to play the Hypersonic as the Midi output Track |Properties|Outputs

Hypersonic is a synth; therefore, it would show up under soft synths. The cool thing about sonar is that you can drop a softsynth into an audio channels FX-Bin. Sonar will then route the audio output of the soft synth to this channel. You can then insert a MIDI track to control the synth. The cool thing about the synth rack is that it creates all the tracks for you, but Sonar still leaves the old fashioned way available just in case.

I dumped HS along with all of my other Steinberg gear about a year and a half ago, so I am going from memory here. But, I think their should be a Hypersonic.dll in the same folder as the exe file. Also, dongle problems can cause that error message too.

Just for kicks after installing the new 7.02 update I was just curious to see if I could load the Hypersonic 2 VSTi ...
You know what???

IT WORKS!

I still prefer to use the DXi version in this case as I can get the banks and patches to show up so it just feels a little better for me but to have the VST now owrking is a great plus.

Thanks Cakewalk for the great update.
