Hi ,
it may be an option, to install another DAW - like studio one free
on your machine to see, if this issues happen also.

Hi, like Pragi said, install another DAW demo and see what it is.
But why are you keep reinstalling Windows? Instead may be you should download X3 all over again, and then install it again. You might have a bad copy of X3.
Of course you should uninstall the current X3 now, delete everything that has to do with X3 in your hard drive (c: of course) and in the registry.
Best

Dumb question - are you updating to the e patch?  I am pretty sure there were issues like you are describing with the original release.

Hi all, and thanks for your input.  I had to reinstall windows because of an issue with it not going to sleep, and I was afraid that there may be other problems.  I realize it was most likely stupid to chase that dog as I wasn't going to be using sleep mode anyway on an audio production computer.  I am just anal sometimes.  I was able to fix the sleep problem and now I feel confident that windows and the computer is working correctly.

In regard to Sonar x3, the issue I am having is kind of a small, but annoying one same as I had before.  When I first open Sonar x3 and hit play, I get an error message that says "enable to open audio device"  I hit OK, and then space bar and then it works.  Also, noticed that if i walk away from the file for a little while that when I go back to play the file it will just sit there, hit it again and still nothing, then the screen will go dim and say not responding, then it finally comes back and starts to work.

It is a pain to keep installing everything, I have a lot of work to do.  I just went to use Melodyne and now I am having problems registering it again.

It sounds like your audio device is closing.  You problem may be solved upgrading to Windows 10. It has better legacy support for FW.  I see they have Windows 8 drivers.  Maybe Windows 10 and the unit's W7 drivers would be a better option.  I hate to see a hunk of hardware like that on the discontinued list.  Presonus hardware is on my blacklist.  Not only end users are stuck with potential expensive doorstops but so are vendors.  I have their 1394 unit running on a VIA chipset and never had problems.

You could also try different driver modes if you are using ASIO.  As a shot in the dark you could try ASIO4ALL.

Don't go ASIO4ALL - I don't think this is the solution and may cause more issues.

Make sure your USB ports are not "going to sleep".  This is an advanced power management option - disable USB port suspend.

I may be wrong but when I see an error like this "Unable to open audio record device". To me it means there's an issue with the audio device. I do not use Firewire nor do I have Windows 8 but I Googled your audio card and it seems there aren't any Windows 8 drivers.

Also, piggybacking on Beepster's comment about chipsets here's a list of approved chipsets for your audio device:

You may want to check some threads at the PreSonus forum:

Melodyne used to be difficult for me to use when I was running X2. Trying to do too large pf a file locked me up all the time. If I want to do an entire track I'd export it and launch Melodyne standalone, work on the track and import it back to the project.

Good luck with this. I just bought a new DAW and things are working well. Nothing more disappointing then thinking the problems won't follow you and then they do.

Dave-

Dave is right...
The "Unable to open audio record device" message doesn't mean your audio drivers are broken;
It means they are BUSY.
Look for another program open at the same time using the same drivers
or check the "share audio drivers" option on Sonar preferences.
